Another topic I felt we could bring back from the dead. I'll add a bit to my own.
Like I said before, original characters in games like Harvest Moon are usually not too much of a problem. The farmer itself is a similar character in that reguards, so it is not so unusual and bad.
Though in certain other genres. I'd say in series where they involve powers, you have to be a bit careful.

Weird that you bumped this, since I recently became invloved in a project where I had to make some HM OCs. It's a little outside my comfort zone, but I thought it might be good to do something different. I can see why people might want to make an OC and write a fanfic about him/her, and if people want to do that, that's fine. But for me, I put an empahsis on the word fan in fanfiction, fanart and fancomics. I want to read about the characters I'm a fan of. There are always exceptions, of course.

OC's........I'm more of a crossover fan. I highly enjoy some fics where Inuyasha or Sesshomaru landed in the Naruto world and took care of him and trained him. I also liked it when Naruto ended up in the Tales of Symphonia world and helped them out.
As for OC's themselves, using them in fanfics, that's ok ONLY if they lead to the development to the fic itself. Using them just for the sake of having them in there is a big no-no to me.
I do like reading fanfic's with OC's in them, but with the exception being my own, I only like it if they're not the main characters, but rather they add on to the plot, making it deeper and keeping it going with few changes in the overall series.
Yes, I have written several fanfics with original characters in them. My Harvest Moon ones were more or less rough drafts to test myself. The result of which ended up being the Final Fantasy fic (which might be cancelled because Jux doesn't want to work on it anymore), and a Tales of Symphonia one I am making (to tie up many loose ends in that game, I will use an OC to explain what I think probably happened and to further explain in detail what did happen).
Also note, I think when someone explains the story through the eyes of an OC, I don't think that makes them the main character. When I try it, they just explain things differently. While the camera may be focused on them, they explain everything as a whole, not just themselves.

I agree with Zero on this.
Although it is rare that I use originals in fics, I have made a Harvest Moon fanfic with nothing but original characters. It wasn't bad, and I was trying to test my creative side. But originals are best used for the story development, rather than having off characters. I also have no beef with off/spinoff characters, but I rarely use them as well.
