Chapter 69
A week later as Jack was working in his field he heard two people shouting. It sounded that it was coming from the chicken ranch. Wandering over to the Northeast corner, he looked over to see that it was Rick and Popuri.
“Why are you mad at me? I’m trying to learn how to take care of the chickens, but you go to fast.”
“I’ve been telling you the same things for over a season! You just don’t want to listen to me!”
“When I make a mistake, you always shout at me! You always say that I’m stupid!”
“Some of those mistakes could kill the chickens!”
The door to the house opened and Lillia stepped out, “What are you shouting about? Can’t you two get along with each other?”
Rick turned to his mother, “Popuri almost caused three of our chickens to die!”
Popuri turned to her mother, “I didn’t mean to give them too much food. They just looked like they hadn’t eaten in several days.”
Rick turned back to Popuri, “Some of our chickens always look like that! You need to understand that we have different types of chickens!”
Lillia burst out crying and started to shake, “Will you stop fighting! I can’t take it any…..” Then all of a sudden Lillia collapsed to the ground.
Rick and Popuri screamed, “MOM!!!!!”
Jack saw that if he tried to jump from his fence across the brook to the other fence, he could seriously hurt himself. So he sprinted through his farm over to the chicken ranch.
Rick and Popuri were sobbing, “Mom! Mom! Please wake up! Please don’t die!”
Jack felt for a pulse, it was light but he sensed that it was still strong. He heard a clump as if something heavy was dropped to the ground, and running footsteps were coming from the entrance to the ranch. Turning to see who it was, Jack saw it was Gray.
“What happened? Is she dead?”
“No, there is a pulse. We need to get Tim and Elli here.”
Gray shook his head, “That would take to long. Let’s just take her to the Clinic.”
Without waiting for Jack’s reply, Gray carefully lifted Lillia up and quickly walked towards the Clinic. Jack walked along with Gray, followed by Rick and Popuri.
Now and then Jack could hear whimpering sounds coming from behind him. Jack felt anger building up inside, but felt that it would not be the right time to scold Rick and Popuri.
Jack opened the door to the Clinic, with Gray following close behind.
Elli looked up from the medical book she was reading, “Hi Jack, Gra…… Oh my! What happened?!? Tim! Get out here right now! We have an emergency!”
From behind the curtain to the examination room, the sound of a chair toppling over was heard.
A serious look was on Tim’s face, “What is…… Bring her in here Gray. Elli find out what happened then get in here.”
Elli gave a nod, “Yes Doctor. Ok, what happened?”
Sobbing Popuri squeaked, “Mommy fell down, Mommy fell down.”
With tears in his eyes Rick said, “She…. She just shook then fell down.”
With a low growl Elli said, “That doesn’t help. Jack did you see any of this?”
“Yes. Rick and Popuri were fighting. Lillia came out and got upset about them fighting. She burst out crying and started to shake. After yelling at them for fighting, she collapsed to the ground. I saw that if I tried to jump from my fence across the brook to their fence, I could hurt myself. I sprinted over to their ranch. Just after I felt for her pulse, Gray showed up. I suggested to get you and Tim there, but Gray felt it would take to long. So we brought her here.”
Gray stepped back into the reception room.
Elli nodded, “Thank you Jack. Now all of you wait here.” Elli then headed into the examination room.
An agonizing thirty minutes past, then Elli stepped back into the reception room. There was a look of anger on her face. She stormed over to Rick.
Rick stood up, “How is our…..”
Elli grabbed Rick by his shirt collar, “YOU IDIOT! Do you realize the stress you put on your mother when you fight with your sister!?!”
“I, I, I….”
“SHUT UP! I know that you are angry at your father for leaving to find that rare medicinal flower four years ago. So you feel you need to take out your anger on someone else. Well I’m sorry that you were forced to be an adult sooner then you wanted to. But you are eighteen about to be nineteen in five days. Start being an adult and not a kid!”
Tears started to well up in Elli’s eyes, “I had to grow up after my parents died when the cruise ship they were on sank in that big storm. With Grandma’s legs going bad, I had to start taking care of her and my brother Stu. Not once have I complained. You should be lucky you still have both parents. If I have kids, I don’t have any parents to ask for advice on raising them. I don’t even know if I’m raising Stu the way they would have.”
Elli let go of Rick’s shirt and crumpled to her knees sobbing.
Rick blinked his eyes, “El, Elli, I, I…….”
Elli looked up at Rick with a look of hatred in her eyes, “Get out you four eyed idiot!”
“But…..”
Elli pointed to the door, “Gray, get this slime ball jerk out of here.”
Gray nodded and dragged Rick out of the Clinic.
Popuri squeaked, “Is my Mommy going to be ok?”
Slightly softening her expression Elli said, “I hope so sweetie. She will need to stay here for tonight. Do you know how to cook?”
Popuri nodded, “Uh-huh.”
“That’s good. So go home and cook something for yourself and your brother, even if he doesn’t deserve it. You can come tomorrow and see your mom.”
With a few tears still falling from her eyes Popuri said, “Ok Elli. If my Momm… Ummm, my Mom is awake, please tell her I said good night.”
A small smile appeared on Elli’s face, “Ok sweetie, now run along home.”
Popuri nodded and left.
Elli turned to Jack, “I’m sorry you saw me lose my temper like that. It’s just that…..”
Elli began sobbing with occasional hic-ups.
Jack walked over and knelt down next to Elli. Holding her in a hug he gently said, “That’s ok. You’re not the only one who wanted to chew Rick out for being a jerk.”
A giggle came out of Elli, “Let me guess, it was you.”
With a chuckle Jack replied, “Yes.”
“I guess that even nice guys have a dark side.”
“The same can be said for nice girls. We keep the dark side of us under locks. But every so often it gets released when the right buttons are pushed.”
From behind the curtain to the examination room Tim appeared, “That’s an interesting statement Jack, and it is true.”
A look of concern crossed Elli’s face, “Tim, did you hear…?”
“Yes.”
“Are you going to fire me for……?”
“No.”
“Do I still have a chance to become a doctor?”
A smile appeared on Tim’s face, “Yes.”
Elli sighed, “Thanks Tim. If it’s ok, can we close early?”
“Sure.”
“Thanks, and thank you Jack for comforting me.”
Jack chuckled, “You’re welcome. May I suggest that you have some tea?”
Elli raised an eyebrow, “Why?”
Jack smiled, “Since alcohol amplifies the mood you are in, tea is way more relaxing then coffee.”
A grin crossed Elli’s face and with a giggle she said, “That’s a good idea Doctor Jack.”
Tim raised and eyebrow, “Am I missing out on a joke?”
Chuckling Elli shook her head, “Maybe. Back on Ann’s birthday, Jack suggested to Karen that she should tell her dad to take a hot bath to let the steam help him get over that cold he had. I felt that Jack gave advice that a doctor would.”
Chuckling Tim said, “I see. Well I’m going to get back to the paperwork I was working on.”
Tim turned and reentered the examination room.
Jack and Elli stood up.
“Would you like to have some tea with me Jack?”
“Sure Elli, I’d be glad to have a cup of tea with you.”
“Karen is right about you.”
“What do you mean?”
A smile crossed Elli’s face, “You truly are a nice guy.”
Elli placed her hands on Jack’s shoulders then she leaned forward and softly kissed Jack on the lips, “Don’t ever change.”

Wow. Interesting, though my personal beef is that Jack explained a little too much about what he did and did a little too much. I'm sure Rick could figure out how to take his mother to the Clinic .

Then again since Rick was arguing with Popuri he might not have thought about getting Lillia to the Clinic.

If you are wondering why did I have Elli tear into Rick with anger. Well last week ( Friday, February 8 ), I was assigned a different route to clean. Most of you do know that I work as a janitor. Anyway, the person who normally cleaned that route, before he left for his weekend, he replaced the vacuum bag in his vacuum the most wrong way to put in the new one. Meaning it was backwards and upsidedown. Now if it was just backwards it would have worked normally. But upsidedown it will not work at getting the dustbunnies, small bits of paper. So I needed to vent my anger out, so what better way to take it out on a fictional character instead of a real person. So don't worry, the next chapter will not be violent.

Thanks Pickle, I was wanting at first to have Elli get mad but not chew Rick out the way I did. I wanted her to scold him for being a jerk. But like I said when that co-worker put the vacuum bag the wrong way, it made me mad. So instead of taking one of the spare wooden broom handles, crave the word sense into it, and tap it on his head, I vented my anger out another way. I did find out that he has been transfered to a different site. He was rude to the supervisor ( and that is not a smart thing to do ).

Well, I'm glad you found a different way to vent. I also always love it when people interact toghether in town that is not normally shown in the game.

Chapter 70
Popuri slowly walked back to the chicken ranch. She could see her brother and Gray in the distance. Rick was walking with his head and shoulders slumped. It looked like Gray was clenching and unclenching his hands into fists.
*I wonder if Gray is going to hit Rick. If he does, should I be glad? Or should I get mad at Gray for hurting my brother? What is this feeling I’m having? I feel that Elli wanted to tell me that I should also need to start acting like an adult. I think she is right. So maybe I’ll ask for candy on the Pumpkin Festival for the last time this year.*
As Popuri was reaching the chicken ranch, she saw Gray crouching to pick up the bag he dropped earlier.
Nervously Rick asked, “What in there?”
With a look of anger Gray replied, “Ore that I mined earlier today.”
“You’re taking that to your Grandfather’s shop?”
“Yes.”
“Let me carry that for you.”
“Why?”
“I feel the need to do something to make amends for causing this trouble.”
“No.”
“Please Gray.”
“No., it is too heavy for you to carry. You could hurt yourself.”
“Dam it Gray, if I have to carry that in several loads, so be it.”
Popuri walked up to Gray and placed a hand on his shoulder, “Gray, please let Rick carry that, even if he has to do it one piece at a time.”
Gray looked at Popuri, “That doesn’t sound like something you would normally say.”
Rick blinked his eyes, “Sis, why are you helping me?”
A slight smile crossed Popuri’s face, “Sisters and brothers should help each other. Even if I’m angry at you, you will still be my brother.”
A few tears trickled from Rick’s eyes, “I’m sorry for taking my anger out on you for our father leaving us four years ago to search for that flower. I guess I couldn’t handle having to go from being a teenager to being the man of the house. Elli is right, I’m an idiot. That most likely is the reason Karen dumped me. I kept seeing her as the friend I played with. I failed to see that she matured into a woman.”
Popuri glanced at Gray. It looked like he softened his expression.
“Alright Rick. If you feel that you need to carry this ore to my Grandfather’s shop, carry it, but take it in smaller loads.”
For a few minutes Popuri watched Rick carry some of the ore. Her stomach growled, “I guess I better get lunch started.”
After washing her hands she got out the frying pan and cracked open a few eggs. As Popuri was making the scrambled eggs, Rick entered the house. He sat down at the dinning table. Popuri placed a plate in front of Rick.
“You made lunch?”
“Yes.”
“Why? I don’t deserve it.”
Popuri sighed, “You do need to eat something.”
Rick looked across the table he noticed that there was something different about his sister.
Popuri looked up from her plate, “Rick is something wrong?”
Rick shook his head, “No. It’s just you seem more mature now.”
“I think that Elli wanted to say that I should also grow up.”
“I don’t think she would say that.”
“Yes she would. I know that mom and you want me to grow up. Most likely everyone else in town would want me to grow up.”
Rick sat in silence for a few minutes, “You don’t need to do that.”
“Rick I want to. After all if I continue to remain childlike, how would I get a boyfriend? At least one that you would approve of.”
Rick sensed that his sister was referring to Kai, “You really like Kai, don’t you?”
Popuri heard that Rick was asking in a kind tone of voice.
“Yes.”
“What is it that makes you like him?”
Popuri poked at her food and made a sad sigh, “He’s kind, maybe testing to see if he can trust someone with whatever it is that is troubling him.”
A puzzled look crossed Rick’s face, “Why would he be doing that?”
Popuri shook her head, “I don’t know. Maybe it has to do with him not liking his mom and dad.”
Rick widened his eyes, “He doesn’t like his parents?”
“Yes. You would have found out about that if you had befriended him.”
Rick saw the sad look on his sister’s face, “You’re right, I could learn from him.”
A puzzled look crossed Popuri’s face, “Huh?”
“Back on the Starry Night Festival, when we were arguing about Kai. You said that is only being nice with the flirting he does, and that I could learn from him. I’m sorry for rolling my eyes when mom was comforting you while telling you that dad should be here to see how beautiful you have become.”
“Why would you think that I’m not beautiful?”
“I think it’s I was so used to you being flat-chested and your hair was done up in pig-tails, also because you are my sister. I’ve heard that guys that think there sister is beautiful are looked at as being weird.”
“I wouldn’t think that.”
A rueful smile crossed Rick’s face, “Thanks. I think I can see why Karen is mad at me. I was used to her being flat-chested as well. I don’t blame her for liking Jack. Come to think of it, Jack and Gray helped us get mom to the Clinic. We need to do something to thank them.”
“Like what?”
“Well…. Gray wouldn’t have any use for a chicken, so maybe let him have a free egg every day for two years. For Jack…. well…. I guess he could have a chicken. I think he got his chicken coop repaired. I’m not sure which chicken we should give him.”
Popuri rubbed her chin, “Hmmm….. How about Henny?”
“No, she hasn’t started to lay eggs.”
“No, she did lay her first egg today.”
Rick widened his eyes, “Really?”
Popuri nodded her head, “Yes. So how about her and enough feed to the end of winter?”
A soft smile crept on Rick’s face, “Ok, but could you come with me when I tell him?”
“Yes, he should be less likely to be mad at you.”
“Ok, but to make sure, we’ll tell him tomorrow. Oh, thanks for making me lunch.”
“You’re welcome Rick, but you might want to wash your hands after carrying that ore.”
Rick laughed, “Right.”
