I like things to be realistic. And when you read it, you have to imagine it. Imagine it happening in your head. I tend to like shipping fics because it sort of feels like a real enviroment; if done correctly. Which is why I love the detail.

Hrm...what makes a good story in my view? Let me see...
Mary Sues/Gary Stus. Kill. Death. If I see one, it makes me wanna gag. I've actually found a site that'll help people attempting to write something make sure their character's aren't the mentioned evils. Quite useful, if only I could remember the URL. >_>
In character is obvious, although there's a few things. One, if the character doesn't actually talk in the game, (Points to Link, etc.) then it may be difficult to choose an exact personality, methinks. Just having a character that just seems like the "Strong, silent" type doesn't suit me. I find that adding a bit seems fun, so long as it doesn't go hellishly overboard. And it actually seems like how the character might act works, too.
Names are another thing, such as characters that don't have a set name in their games (Points to DQM:Joker's protagonist). I've named him Yorick in my fic. The reasoning behind this is from the amount of card puns in it. And from my memory, Yorick means "Joker" so it fits. As long as the name fits, then it would work, methinks. And nothing like "Raven Sapphire Moonbeam" or something. >__>;
Falling into the game world is another thing that's good. Something like "[Insert Protagonist] turned on the power to his [Insert Name of Game] game. All of a sudden, a bright light shone forth, and [Insert Protagonis] felt him/herself being sucked in." That doesn't seem...I don't know what the word is. Why not something different? Why not end up dieing, then ending up in that world? >.>
Powers are another thing, and I am pointing to OC's. I mean...so long as they do not go overboard, I'm fine. But something like, "[Insert Character] recieved an amulet, that glowed with great power. It bestowed him/her with the ability to fly, speak with animals, the ability to channel the energy of love from their hearts into a beam of utter doom, (yadayada.)"
>__> Yeah. >___>

Starting with a list of things I don't like: - Obvious wish fulfillment. This includes Mary and Gary-Stus and the author getting sucked into his or her Game Boy, television, etc. While I do think it can be done right if an author is careful about it, when it's just, "Omigosh I got sucked into my Game Boy and it's Cliff! Let's get married!" then it's boring to read. The author may find it exciting, but unless there are some twists I don't find it very appealing.
- Character bashing. One time I did a search for "Tracy" in the Pokemon fics and something like one third of them had Tracy-bashing. Then for Harvest Moon there's mostly Rick-bashing. At the very worse the main character is rude to those characters, yet still remains loved in the village because...s/he's the
author main character.
- Characters who are out of character, especially when it's just to have a villain. I still remember that one fanfic that had a ton of chapters and was really well-written. Then Kai gets drunk and tries to assault the main character.
Yeah.
- IMs during the story. It just seems so...weird and unnecessary, especially in a Harvest Moon fanfic.
- "Tee hee I wrote this while I was high on sugar!"
The good stuff: - Characters acting in character and doing it consistently.
- Summaries and stories with proper grammar/punctuation/spelling/etc.
- Realistic character actions.
- The word "said" or, if possible, dialogue tags omitted.
- Interesting stories. Even if they're not of the best quality as long as the author can tell a story they can still be good.

Another thing: I've seen quite a few fanfics where the characters "sweatdropped". Anime style sweatdrops are a visual gag that doesn't translate well to prose I totally agree. Reminds me of the time I was reading a Pokemon fanfic. It was a really cute read about Misty and Ash and I had been really enjoying the realism of it all...until "After Ash's racy comment, Misty pulled her famous hammer that was the size of her body and smacked him over the head!" ...Yeah. I was just like, "WHAT?? When did we get sucked back into the cartoon?!" And then after things like that - especially when Misty would always pull out her "magic hammer" whenever anyone got her angry - I just can't take the story seriously anymore. Which is sad. ;_;
