Chapter 5 ~ Oops!
"You have to be kidding. Popouri, maybe you shouldn't eat so much candy..." Mary poked curiously at the rooster nested upon the bed.
"Oh, Mary! I'm not kidding! This big, funny colored chicken is my brother!" Rick shot a slightly offended stare at his sister at that remark, "That stream, it grants wishes! It's true! You wrote a story that turned my brother into a chicken! When mom finds out..." She held her hands to her cheeks and shook her head in dismay.
She looked out the window as Grey walked out of the Inn, looking quite sad, "It just can't be your brother. It's absolutely impossible. I've read almost every science book in the library..."
"You wrote a book and it came to life." Popouri picked up her brother to carry him like a pet or something.
"Well, I guess we are in a really weird situation... but we don't have any proof that he's Rick." She sat on the bed where Rick had been plucked off it.
"Okay, I'll prove it!" Popouri dropped her brother on the ground and held her hand against her mouth, "Oops! Sorry, Rick. Okay, now I need you to do something... you. Okay... now!" Rick stood there, at a loss. There's not a lot you can do with feathers and clawed feet that is anything distinctly human, "Come on, don't be shy. Do something." Rick sat on the floor and looked away, "Ignoring me isn't something you do often! Do something Rick-like! Freak out! Waer those dorky glasses! Cluck at my boyfriend! Do something!" She bopped his head gently, as to not hurt his smaller body.
Rick got up and looked around the room. There had to be something he could do. He hopped up on the desk to see how hard it was to write with a beak. Okay, that's a little impossible. He dropped the pen onto the squiggle-filled paper and hopped along to the other side of the room into the closet. He then remembered, he had lost his spare pair of glasses last month when a sudden wind storm hit. No luck there. There had to be something.
Popouri sighed, "I guess I am imagining it..." She sat sadly on the floor, "Maybe I'm still just upset over the fight they had yesterday..." She began to sniff a little. Rick frowned as much as a chicken could and trotted over to his siter and looked up at her face, slowly being soaked by soft little tears. He clucked a little and got up on her shoulder, "Eeek! Oh, are you trying to cheer me up, little guy? I wish my I knew where you came from, since you aren't my brother..." Rick Clucked agin and rushed downstairs in a hurry. Popouri looked over and was filled with hope as she grabbed Mary's hand and dragged her downstairs to see what he was doing.
Outside, Rick found that he could write. Just unfortunately not with a pen. He scribbled as legibly in the dirt as he could his name, hoping that would convine her. He would've written more, excusing the fact he hit a rock in the dirt at the end of the 'k'. Mary looked at the writing, a little shocked. Lillia did say this was a wild rooster. Rick then looked over and clucked as he dashed over to the last place he was human, and when he returned, he was holding his glasses in his beak. Mary's eyes widened, and she screamed in shock.
Upstairs again, "Okay, okay, okay, you turned you brother into a chicken..."
"And I think my mom has a crush on Carter, too. She keeps visiting the church and bringing him gifts. There's something weird with that water." Popouri was trying to sew something together, a little furiously.
"Then why didn't it grant my wish? Mine would've been simpler than turning a man into a rooster." She looked up as the doorbell rang throughout the house. Mary opened the door as Emajuu quickly fled, leaving a half paralyzed Grey on the doorstep, "G-Grey?"
"Hi..." He gulped, "Mary... Uhm... I, uhh, brought you some... err, flowers..." He held out the mixed boquet of blue flowers and grasses. Mary took the gift in a little shock, "I was worried when your mom told me you were to upset to work at the library so I... I... came to tell you... that... I... I..." The words held onto the sides of his throat like a clawed little animal, afriad to come out, "I... love... you..." He became very pale and red at the same time, both sick and lovestruck. Mary's jaw dropped.
"You do?" She was speechless and looked at the flowers, "I love you... too." She blushed as Popouri 'aww'ed in the background. Grey lost his paleness and his cheeks began to feel warm, "I thought you liked Ann, so I got really upset."
"Me and Ann? You know she likes Cliff way too much to ever like me. And to tell you the truth, she's a little too... hyper for me..." He felt ill, but it was a good ill, because he was actually liked back.
"Oh, thank you, Grey." She smiled, and began to cry a little out of joy, "I'll talk to you later. Popouri needs my help. Why don't we got out for dinner tonight at the inn?" Was this really Mary talking? She was actually asking out a boy! And best of all, she wasn't unconsious, yet!
"Dinner's on me. See you at 7." He smiled as she closed the door, and immediatly fell backwards. Emajuu rushed over.
"Hey, Grey?" He swun his hand back and forth over Grey's eyes.
"She likes me..." He sighed and passed out.
Emajuu sighed, "Why did she have to hide so far from the hospital." He groaned in displeasure as he dragged the other young man to the hospital.
Mary closed the door and let herself slide down it, "Oh, Popouri! HE loves me back! It did fulfill my wish..." She smiled dreamily. Tonight, her and her dream date would have a romantic dinner outside the inn at one of the tables, and sit under the full moon and stars. She looked over and laughed, "Oh my... what is that you made him?"
"Taadaa! Now he is truly capable of having the title, Little Rick!" She revealed his new little outfit she had been sewing together. Indeed, it was a chicken version of his regular clothes, and to say the least, he was rather embarassed for a rooster.
There were some giggles, then silence, then a problem, "Your mom! She's coming home!" Mary could here Lillia's humming through the walls, "We have to get back to the stream! Quick!" They managed to climb out a window to escape the threat of Popouri's dear mother finding her son a rather humiliated rooster.
"Popouri, put him down so he can find some rain protection." Mary advised her friend. Popouri looked down, and nodded.
"Hehe, oops, go on Rick." she set him down and he went immediatly to a nice big tree, "Now, this is where I saw the face, I think. It was just looking at me all curious, I guess I just thought I was imaging things."
"That's not an easy thing with this stream." She knelt down, "Okay, here goes. Alright, whoever is in there, we need your help again! Please!" Nothing came out, "Uhm, mister? Or miss. Please, we need you to undo a spell!"
"I'm so sorry... I thought I did a good thing." The watery woman poked up from behind, scaring the two girls stiff, "I thought you said he was 'better off' with the chickens?"
"Well, I didn't know my brother would lose about 4 and a half feet in height and sprout feathers, lady. turn him back before I lose my nail polish!" She begged the young lady.
"Wait, what and who are you?" Mary slowly stood, finding that it didn't seem the girl would hurt her.
"I am Nelrylia, spirit of you magic stream, Mary. I only make people happy." She bowed gracefully.
"What have you done already? You mean Grey and Rick weren't theo nly ones you did?" Popouri tried to protect her hair from the worsening rainstorm.
"I gave the pink haired lady and the cute little pastor happiness. They were both having feelings of loneliness, so I fixed it. And you wanted the tan man to come back from the city, so I did. And you, Lady Mary, well, I'm afraid I couldn't do much with your wish. The shy one already liked you so much..."
"He did? Why didn't he tell me" she asked curiously.
"I said shy for a reason!" Nelly giggled, "And you Popouri, you said what you said, so I made your cute little brother happy, right?"
"No! I think he just likes chickens. I don't think he wants to be one. Can you fix this all please? You see, that pink haired lady is already married to my dad, and Kai has a life in the city he has to work with."
"I cannot reverse my spells." She said solemnly, "You see, in terms od dieties, I'm still a baby at this. I can only grant wishes. And I still have Kai here for a reason, pink haired child. You see, that's how Lady Mary made me." She smiled and bowed to Mary.
"It was just a story! Really, I didn't mean for it to come true and cause trouble."
"Now now, you know you wished for it. Listen, leave little Rick, was it, with me and I shall try to reverse the spell If you need to speak with him, just come here at night. He should be human at night..."
"Can't I take him home?"
"Well, if you want him turning from a chicken to a man at sunset, go ahead. But I'm sure it'd be awkward for you neighbors..."
"Alright, but please hurry. Wait, what am I going to tell mom?"
"Tell her... that... I know! Tell her that he drowned!"
"Uhm, any better ideas?" Popouri thought it through. Nope, her dead borther returning wouldn't seem right at all.
"Tell her that... Oh! I know! Tell her that he is staying with a friend! She'll never know he's a rooster, I swear." She held up her hand, "Spirit's honor!"
"Oh.. alright. You know the best... Nelrylia, right?" Popouri shrugged and hugged her brother again, "You'll be better soon, okay, Rick?" She smiled then forwned again, "I'm so sorry. I should never have wished for this..." Rick seemed forgiving as he nudged her leg in an attempt to try and show affection as a rooster.
"Come on, Popouri. I'm getting all wet, and mom is going to be worried if I catch a cold." Mary smiled and led her friend through the thickening haze of fog that was descending, only slightly comforted by the young, inexperienced spirit's good-bye waves. She just hoped nothing else would go wrong.
