Thanks. The next chapter will provide a reason why the intruder was so interested in Maty's book.

Chapter 6~ Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary
Ann shakily walked home, goose bumps on her pale arms. She was suddenly cold, even in the warm Spring weather. She was still shaken and nervous after what had happened in the Library. Of course, it was nothing to big, but Ann still felt worried. She decided to go home for lunch-- maybe the reason why she was shaky was because she was hungry. This wouldn't have been the first time.
"Dad?" Ann called to her father as soon as she got in, trying to sound cheerful. Doug glanced up at his daughter. "Oh hello, Ann." he said, going back to his work. "I'll just be in the kitchen." Ann continued, and walked over to the kitchen door. She walked inside and threw open the cookbooks, looking for a recipe that appealed to her. "Salad, no... pie, no... pudding, no... hmm... boxed lunch? Nah. Cookies...no-- wait." She scanned the recipe. "I'll just make chocolate-chip cookie dough and eat that." she thought, and got to work.

About half an hour later, Ann was finishing off her cookie dough. Doug enetered the room and saw his daughter toss the bowl and spoon into the sink, to be washed later. "If you think I'm cleaning that up..." Doug warned. Ann rolled her eyes. "I'll do it, Dad," she answered in a sweet voice, and closed the door behind her. It was that I was hungry, after all, Ann thought with a small smile. But the thought of the intruder in Mary's Library still frightened her. She should tell Mary. Her pace quickened, and Ann was soon at the door of Mary's Library. She twisted the doorknob and stepped inside. Unlike before, it was very dark inside. Ann squinted and looked around before checking the clock next to the door. It was only 3:50. So. The Library wasn't closed yet. Ann began to get goose bumps again, and the fine hairs on her arms stood on end. She shivered and realized that she was scared. Of a Library? she asked herself. Nothing could possibly be wrong. Mary was probably getting ready for closing time. She'd come downstairs any second now and surprise Ann. But a part of Ann knew that wasn't going to happen. "M-mary?" Ann called, saying something for the first time since she'd come inside. She wasn't too shocked that she had stuttered-- she was scared, after all. She also knew that something was wrong, there was no denying it. And she had to help Mary! Who knows what was happening at this very moment... Ann sprinted up the stairs, two at a time. She quickly looked around, her eyes now accustomed to the darkness. There was no sign of Mary. She looked behind bookshelves; she even searched in the bookshelves. But, soon she admitted defeat on the upstairs. Mary was not there. So, she retreated back downstairs, more catiously this time. As she reached the bottom floor, she walked towards the booksheleves. She was pretty sure that Mary was not behind the bookshelves-- "Ouch!" Ann cried as she tripped over... a book? She slowly stood up and looked around. There was a pile of books by an empty bookshelf. It didn't take a genius to figure out where Mary was. Ann dove to the pile and began throwing books everywhere, looking for Mary. Soon, Ann's hand bumped into a cold, white hand. Ann felt the color draining from her already plae face. There was no doubt in her mind that this was Mary. She hurriedly dug the girl out of the pile and gasped when she saw the librarian. She was so pale that she practically glowed. Her glasses were shattered, and yet, still on Mary's nose. Her face was covered with tiny cuts, and she was unconscience. Ann gasped and tried picking Mary up to carry her to the Clinic, but with no avail. She realized she had to get Basil and Anna, so she stood up, glanced sadly at Mary and rushed next door. ***

Chapter 7~ Family Problems
"Anna! Basil!" Ann shouted as she threw open the door to Mary's house. Both Basil and Anna looked up, startled. "What is it?" Basil asked, concerned. Ann just rolled her eyes and sat back down. "Well, really, it can't be so horrible, if they sent Ann," Anna said snottily. Ann tried not to glare at Mary's mother, because Mary was her friend. It was no secret that Anna now disliked Ann very much because she especially disliked Cliff, who boarded at the Inn. Anyone who even showed any kindess towards Cliff was not a good person in Anna's eyes. "Actually, this is extremely important, if you value your daughter's life," Ann answered cooly. Anna gasped. "What have you done to Mary?" she shrieked. Basil glared at his wife. "Now, hold on a minute, Ann!" he said in a warning voice. "I'm--" "There's no time to talk," Ann said in desparation. "Mary is loosing blood fast!" Without waiting for Basil and Anna to respond, she ran out and sprinted next door.
Basil entered first, his face pale. He rushed to his daughter's side and kneeled next to her cold body. "Mary, no..." he whispered, and for the first time, Ann thought she saw tears forming in Basil's dark eyes.
Anna entered more slowly, her cheeks flushed and... a small smirk on her face? Ann shook her head and glanced at Mary again. Mary's mother would never be smiling at a time like this. "Oh, NO!" Anna cried and bent over her daughter, peering at her like she was looking at an insect crawling on her floors. "These floors are going to need waxing!" She touched a dab of blood with her finger and grimaced. "That red does not go with that tile." Both Ann and Basil gaped at Anna. She acted like she cared more about the floor than her only daughter! Anna looked at them, puzzled. She glanced down and said, "Oh. OH! Mary, dear!" as if she just now remebered her suffering daughter. She, unlike Basil, did not kneel on the floor. She hardly bent over, but stood up straight and pointed a pale, bony finger at Ann. "You... what did you do to my daughter?" she asked in a cold and cruel voice. Ann was so taken aback, she couldn't say anything. She was the one who had warned Mary's parents! Why would se be accused? Basil seemed to be thinking along the same lines. "Now, Anna. I'm sure Ann had absolutely nothing to do with this--" "Oh, so you take the girl's side over your own WIFE!" shrieked Anna shrilly. Basil looked taken aback. "No, I'm just saying your idea is far-fetched..." "It sounds like you are taking her side!" "Anna, I'm just saying that I don't think Ann is the kind of person who would do something like this," Basil said calmly, yet firmly. Anna glared at her husband and crossed her skinny arms. "A bit judgemental, aren't we, Basil?" she snarled. Basil just stared, as if in a trance. After a moment he shook his head, and without another glance at his wife, picked Mary up into his arms. "This is no time for silly arguments." Basil said softly, "We need to get our daughter to the Clinic now. Come on, Ann." With that, he strode out of the room, Ann at his heels. ***
