Chapter 1:
"Karen?" I whispered quietly as I hid beneath the table for the sixth time that evening. "I think we should leave before he spots us." Karen just looked at me then went back to admiring the guy at the counter. After several hours of Karen watching Kai, I got up and leave.
"What are you doing here this late?" he asked, I turned around to face him. Glancing at my watch I noticed the time, one in the morning.
"Er..." I started.
"Stay and have a drink, I want talk to you anyway" he smiled going over to prepare to drinks. I sat down at a table and looked out of the window, where the tide slowly washed the sand, the sea glittered in the moonlight. The dull shack I was in seemed somewhat boring. Maybe I shouldn't of come here, after all. But it was kind of late to have second thoughts. I had come to Mineral Town to take over my aunts farm. Where one horse, Nala, and one cow, Delta lived their lonely lives. My aunt had recently pasted away, and I was the only one able to look after it, due to very confusing problems. So far I'd only made friends with Karen and a miserable lad named Cliff, and maybe Kai will be a friend too soon. He came back with the drinks.
"So, what's your name?" he asked sitting down. "Kayra" I answered, lifting the cup. "I'm Kai. I noticed you've been looking pretty lonely since you came here. That guy Mountain..." "Cliff" I interrupted. "Right, Cliff, is not the best company you can have, if you know what I mean." "No, I don't."
Kai rolled his eyes, then took a mouthful from the cup.
"You'll figure it out someday" he spoke quietly, but smiled all the same. Karen came out from under the table and ran out of the shack.
"Was that Karen?" Kai asked confused.
By the time he had finished his sentence I was already pulling open the door and stepping outside. But, she was gone. I sighed deeply then walked across the sand, delicately stepping onto the pier, trying to remember what had just happened. I heard steps behind me, then someone placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Do you really think that I'm bad company?" a voice spat, it sounded offended.

Chapter 2:
The grip on my shoulder grew tight, until pain flew down my arm.
"No, I don't, why?" I answered the cruel sounding voice. The hand was removed and the body sat beside me.
"You alright, Cliff?" I asked him, noticing several tears leave his eyes. "Yeah, I'm fine..." "So how do you know what Kai said?" "Karen told me" he replied raising an eyebrow.
The two of us sat in silent at the end of the pier, for several hours. The sun began to rise, and the sea glistened in front of us. The local 'shipping man' Zack approached us.
"G'morning, your up early" he greeted, "you been here all night?" "Most of it" I faked a smile, he then left to begin his 'chores'.
"I better get going" Cliff mumbled as he got up, "see you around."
Cliff left me sitting alone at the end of the pier. I closed my eyes, and when I opened them I was staring into the eyes of Kai.
"Hey there, how you doin'" he smiled as he sat down beside me. "Not good..." "What's up?" he asked, a sound of concern in his voice. "Just something to do with Cliff" I said breaking eye contact.
I got up, and so did he. Wrapping an arm round my shoulder, Kai hugged me. I shook myself away from him and walked home.
I entered the farm gates where my small puppy, Scrapps, was waiting for me. He barked excitedly and followed me into the barn. I gave a wave to Delta as I entered. She replied with a gentle 'moo'. I rubbed my hand down her brown back and she looked up at me.
"It's good to see you too" I whispered to her. Scrapps sat down on the floor in front of Delta, but she didn't take any notice of the little pup. I told her about last night, I knew she couldn't reply to me, but at least I felt better about it all. It was great having someone you can talk to without them saying 'your just being stupid worrying all the time'. I put down some animal fodder then sat down on the hard floor of the barn with the silly little dog. He lay down on my lap, and soon started snoring quietly. I smiled at the scruffy bundle of fluff. The barn door creaked open, Scrapps woke immediately and began to growl.
"Hey, Kayra, you in here?" a deep voice sounded. Scrapps stopped growling and ran to the barn entrance. "G'day boy".
I stood up and walked over to the door, it was Zack. But what was he doing here? I rolled up my dusty red sleeve and peered down at my watch. '17: 00' it read. It was collection time.
"Got anything for shipping today?" he looked up from where he was now kneeling, petting the adorable puppy. "Sorry Zack, but no." I replied slightly embarrassed. "Kayra" he started in a stern voice, the type that just makes you want to curl up in a ball and cry, "You know i's your responsibility to take care of the farm and ship before five o'clock. We can't just live on the supplies from the Poultry Farm, the Yodel Ranch and Jeff's store. It's not enough, we need you to do your part. Now when I come here tomorrow I expect to find something for shipping. Now go get an early night and get to work at the crack of dawn." with that he walked off.
"How am I supposed to do that?" I whispered to Scrapps. I decided to take Zack's advice, first I locked up the barn. Then Scrapps and I took a slow walk to the farm house.
