Prologue “Kaian! Kai-Kai!” Eleven year old Nakita, pushing her chocolate hair behind her ears, called out as she chased the boy. “In the name of our island, Kaian, you will truly pay for this!”
“Catch me if you can, Naki!” Kaian cried, laughing, climbing up the nearest palm tree. Shoving his black hair out of his eyes, he eagerly awaited Nakita to climb up.
“You little nutball!” Nakita cried, grinning widely. “What did you make me climb Ancient Palm for? I chased you all over our island already, and now climbing the biggest tree? What next, my crazy best friend?”
“I wanted to show you something, Naki!” Kaian said, grabbing her hand and pointing at the ocean. Nakita gasped as she saw the sunset. The sky glowed in many colors and the water mimicked, shining brilliant color everywhere. Then sun set magnificently, shining its last rays of the day out. The island of Affectueux was famous to the natives and neighbors for its Spring Beginning Sunset.
“It’s beautiful. I’ve never seen it before. Doesn’t symbolize the beginning of love?” Nakita said, blushing and looking at Kaian.
“I’ve seen this sunset hundreds of times.” Kaian boasted proudly, his hands on his hips. “And of course it means beginning of love; it means the beginning of many things.”
“Kai-Kai, you’re only eleven.” Nakita giggled.
“Anyway, I want to tell you something, Naki.” Kaian leaned close to her. “I’m gonna adventure to the outside world tomorrow. Sail the seas and see where life takes me.”
“Kaian!” When he said this, she burst into tears. “Why leave me? We’re best friends! You can’t just leave and forget all about me!”
“I’ll never forget about you, Naki, I promise.” Kaian reached into his pocket. “It took me many months to save up for this.” He handed a coral comb to her. Coral on this island was unusually strong and expensive. The comb’s top was of pink coral and the real brush part was that of a shark. On the coral there was a jewel, and on it scrawled a tiny N.
“Kaian!” Nakita gasped in surprise. “This is for you.” She slipped of the weaved arm bracelet she never took off. On it was brilliant colors woven in the cloth. “It was my mothers.” She said quickly, smiling and tucking the comb in her hair.
“Kaianan!” A voice away called. “Dinnertime!”
“See you. I will be back from my sea trip soon.” Kaian said, planting a kiss on Nakita’s cheek and scrambled down the palm tree, Ancient Palm, to retrieve his dinner.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A couple days later~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“MOM! MOM!” A curly pink haired, eleven year old girl screamed at the top of her lungs. “THERE’S A DEAD BOY ON THE BEACH! DEAD!”
Her similar pink haired mother hurried up to her and carefully gathered the dark haired boy in her arms. She hurried into the abandoned house next to the salesman’s and laid him on the table. He blinked his eyes open.
“What is your name, boy?” The woman carefully soothed.
“Kai.” Kaian said, remembering only half of the nickname his best friend had given him.
“Welcome to your new home, Kai, Mineral Town.” The woman smiled, showing her dimples. She grabbed his hands and led him out to play with her daughter, who he immediately nicknamed Poppy for her name, Popuri.
Six years after that day, the same boy woke up from a nightmare.
Remember that's only the prolouge. Hope you liked the first part! ;D
Ch. 1. The Girl in the Water
Kai bolted up, waking up from the most frightening dream he had had in years. Shaking, he rubbed his arms and felt his bracelet, the same bracelet he had never taken off.
He passed his fingers over the straw and remembered summer was almost over. Every year he took a boat and sailed around the sea, looking for the island he used to live on. He felt the strong need to find it, and what he had left behind. And he only remembered a couple years ago-he had left his best friend. He had felt uneasy for when he had learned this, because he had promised Nakita he would never forget her, no matter what. Even with her bracelet to remind him, he had broken his promise. Secondly, he had promised he would be back soon, and that so called “soon” was six years.
A loud knock on the door of his shack interrupted his thoughts. “Oh Kai!” A loud voice outside sang sweetly. “My dear, I want to tell you something!”
“I’ll be right there, Poppy!” Kai called, and began slipping on his clothes. Popuri was his loved girl until he remembered Nakita, and since then his affection for her had dropped. But Popuri still loved him and would not let go.
When Kai had finished he walked to the front door. He opened it and was squeezed by a curly pink haired, over-eager girl, Popuri. “Kaie!” Popuri said affectionately, standing up. “I have something to ask. Will you stay for the autumn?” She then asked sweetly.
Kai sighed. “Pops, I can’t.” He said. “I have to go find the home I belong to, where I really come from. And there’s this person I need to apologize to.”
Popuri crossed her arms and pouted. “You always have to leave every year.” She argued sulkily. Kai shook his head, but at that moment, they heard a scream.
Popuri grabbed Kai’s hand and ran him outside, where they saw a dark skinned girl collapse on the beach, coughing. Popuri steered him up to the girl, afraid to go herself.
Kai gently reached for the girl and picked her up. He saw she was the same age as he was, and tried to peer into her eyes, but they were closed. He hurried across the beach to deliver her to the doctor, when the girl opened her eyes.
“Where am I?” She asked. “Who are you? My name is Nakita, and I am looking for a boy named Kaian. Do you know him?”
With her concentrating on his face, he quickly shoved the bracelet up his sleeve. “I don’t um, know that is…”
Ch.2- Wrong Intro
Nakita shook herself from Kai’s grasp and lightly landed on the sand. She moved with the grace of a ballerina, and her wet sandy hair fell into her face. She giggled and pushed it out of her hair and looked at Kai.
“I don’t even know your name.” Nakita said, looking deep into his eyes. Her eye lingered there for a moment, then she pushed sand with her toe and looked down.
“My name is, um…” He glanced back at Popuri. She stood there patiently, with crossed arms and politely waiting for them to finish their conversation. “Evan.” He said promptly.
“Oh, well, than you, Evan.” Nakita grinned. “Do you know where here I could stay?”
“There’s the Inn.” Kai shrugged. “Or you could live in my place.”
“The inn would be great.” Nakita smiled, then looked behind him. “Who’s that?”
“My, um, girlfriend, Popuri.” Kai said. “Do you want me to lead you too the Inn?” He linked his arm in hers. Behind him, Popuri began to get furious.
“It would be my pleasure.” Nakita smiled, and walked forward. Kai led her away, pointing out everything she would need to see to come back. After a bit of walk, the pair reached a building. He pointed inside. “Just in there.” He explained.
Nakita grinned at him. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Evan.” She said.
“Tomorrow, Nakita.” Kai said, waving.
She smiled. “You can call me Naki for short.”
Kai shrugged. “Sure, Naki. Or Naks.” He winked, and she beamed back. Turning around with a sweep of her hair, she walked inside eagerly to hunt down new friends. Kai stared after her and it hurt him badly not take her in his arms and tell her everything. But it was too late; he was six years behind, six painful years for her.
He started walking back to the beach, where Popuri was still waiting, impatient and red in the face. He walked over to her, breathless. ‘Man, you’re really out of shape…’ Kai thought as he panted when he talked to Popuri.
“I’m glad to see you helped a new citizen out.” Popuri said with a forced smile on her face. Kai shook hi head and shrugged, answering with “It was nothin’.”
Popuri walked past him, trying to keep back her fury at this Nakita flirting with “her” boyfriend. Kai shook his head as he watched her go, and walked back into his shack.
He threw his bandanna he usually wore around his head to the floor and walked down to his room, where he sat on his bed and looked into his mirror, where he started running a hand threw his hair and thought.
“I need to tell Nakita sometime.” He decided finally. “But not today. I betrayed her already, and she doesn’t need to know the distress already. It will give me pain, anyway, and I don’t need that either.”
He lay back on his bed. Even though it was only three o’clock, he fell into a much-needed and troublesome nap.
Ch. 3- Immediate Surprise-Friends
Kai bolted up from his dream in surprise. Something wafted through the air, the sweet smell of muffins and pancakes. He rubbed his eyes, slipped on clothes. He grabbed a brush from his mirror and hurriedly brushed his hair. Tying a new bandanna around his head, he ran upstairs.
He found Nakita, setting a table in his shack. He hid behind a wall, carefully watching. She set fresh muffins, pancakes, syrup, and the like on there she also toke a fresh flower in a vase and a small note next to it. She looked around carefully and giggled. She left the shop, and Kai emerged from his hiding place.
He looked over the breakfast and sat down. He sniffed the flower, and began shoveling the breakfast in his mouth. Reviewing the note, he finished his breakfast and wiped his mouth quickly, so he could read it properly.
Dear Evan, it read.
It was fun making this for you.
I hope you like this. I made it from fresh berries in my bag. I come from an island that I brought these from.
Your friend, Naki
Kai smiled. He walked back to his cabinet and pulled out more flowers. He also pulled some chocolate out of his fridge. Tucking it into his vest, he made sure his bandanna was on straight and left.
He walked outside and absentmindedly stared out to the sea. He wished he could go back to the island, right now, but suddenly he bumped into something. He fell back onto the ground, and the flowers in his vest fell out. He stared up into the red eyes of Popuri, who stared down at him confusedly.
“Flowers!” She finally said, picked them up and stuck them under her nose. Kai wiped his brow as he started sweating.
“Um, Popuri?” Kai said. “Those flowers aren’t for you.”
“Who else would they be for if not for your girlfriend?” Popuri asked, clutching the flowers to her chest.
“Nakita.” Kai replied. Popuri’s face retorted angrily and she threw the flowers on the ground. “Nakita this, Nakita that, THAT’S ALL YOU EVER TALK ABOUT!!!”
“Pops!” Kai cried. “I only met her yesterday.”
“As of now, we are not talking!” Popuri said, bursting into tears and running away. Kai sighed, picked up the flowers, and tucked them back into his vest. He had already betrayed Popuri now, and soon another would run off like that.
