Chapter 10
For the next week, Jack continued visiting Mary, each time with a small gift. It was usually an herb, or sometimes even some Relax Tea Leaves! With each passing day, Mary grew more and more attachted to him. She liked the gifts, but what she really loved was... him. She'd never fall for a person because of thier gifts, she decided. She didn't want to be like Gray. Speaking of... as her affection for Jack grew, she grew less attachted to Gray.
One day, Mary was searching frantically for a book. "No, no no! I can't have lost it!" Mary wailed to herself. "Lost what?" an oh-so-familiar voice questioned. "Jack!" Mary called, exited. "I lost a book! If you don't mind... could you please help me find it?" "Of course!" he answered. "Thank you! I think I left it on this floor..." "All right. I'll look on this side- you can over there." A few minutes passed, so Mary tentitavely asked, "Have you found anything?" "No- wait! Is this it?" Jack held up an unmistakable book- Basil's. The one she was frantically looking for. "Thank you!" The next thing she knew, Mary was hugging Jack! "Er... sorry." she said. He didn't answer, but smiled. Mary blushed. "Thanks again. Now I can work on my novel!" "Good luck. I know it'll be great." he whispered in her ear. Then, she waved and left. "I'll see you tomarrow..." ***

Chapter 11
Ahh, summer. It had so many festivals, so much to eat, and Kai came back! Not that that was a good thing. Kai flirted with all th girls except her, hence the reason why Mary despised him. It also meant a great time to read on top of Mother's Hill.
"Mary...? Are you OK?" Jack asked. "Oh! You startled me!" Mary said, surprised. "What's wrong? Why are you crying?" He asked again, obviously worried. "Its just a book. I like to read here alone. Its nice and quiet. Away from all the commotion. And... sometimes I get so involved in readin, I cry. Do you cry, sometimes? While reading a book?" Mary asked. "Sometimes." Jack smiled. "Well, then, you deserve this." She handed him the book she was reading. "Its OK. I've read it 3 times already, and you've given me so many gifts already..." Jack grinned and took it gratefully. "Thank you, Mary. Thanks... for everything." With that, he was gone. ***

Chapter 12
Mary woke up on the day of the Fireworks Festival. That meant summer was almost over. She jumped out of bed and dressed. Today the Library would stay closed. That meant that she wouldn't see Jack today, unless, of course, he came to the Festival tonight. Mary blushed. What ifhe asked her? Gray had asked her- Wait! That was the first time in so long when Mary had thought about Gray! Good.
That night, Mary was waiting for the fireworks to start. She caught a familiar shape moving, but ignored it. "BOO!" Jack shouted. "Aiiieee!" Mary shrieked. Jack laughed. "Jack!" Mary scolded. "You scared me!" He smiled in that cute way. "Mary, do you wanna watch the fireworks with me?" "Of course!" she squealed. "Come on! Lets go up to the pier. We'll get a great view." Jack nodded and they went. As the walked, Mary saw Gray staring at her. She looked away quickly, but Jack caught the look. He looked at Gray, and slipped his hand into Mary's. She didn't pull away through the whole thing. "They're so gorgeous..." she whispered. Though she had seen them every year since she was born, they were always new and exiting. Jack nodded and answered, "Very gorgeous." But, he wasn't looking at the fireworks, but at Mary. ***

Chapter 13
Mary was not in a good mood. She, in fact, was ticked off. Why? She was trying to work on her novel, but had writer's block! And did her parents help? Noooooo! They just seemed annoyed and preoccupied. Uncaring. Indifferent. "MARY! That's NOT what we meant!" Anna yelled up the stairs. She was interrupted by a knock. "Wonder who that is?" Anna asked Basil. He shrugged and opened the door. Mary didn't hear anything more, but she was shocked when Jack walked up the stairs! She quickly covered herself up with the pillow, for she wore nothing but underwear and a camisole. He had seen it, because he blushed and looked down. Mary cocked her head- she was curious. "Mary... are you OK?" he asked. "Your folks said something was bothering you, but they didn't know what." So thats was what they were talking about! "Well... I'm writing a novel, as you know, and I've got writer's block! And I still need at least ten more pages of stuff! But, I've written about everything..." her voice trailed off as Jack walked to her bed and sat on it. She suddenly had an idea. "Jack, can I interview you? About life on the farm?" He looked surprised, but nodded and said, "Sure." Mary beamed and began.
"Oh, no! Sorry I kept you so long, Jack!" Mary exclaimed. "I had no idea it took so long!" "It's OK, Mary." Jack assured her. "It's only 6 PM." "Well... still! You got here at 12:30!" He just smiled and shook his head. "Well, see ya later, kay Mary?" "Bye!" He began walking out, but stopped. "Oh, and Mary..." he started. "Cute underwear." ***

Chapter 14
Fall. The season of food, music, and apple-bobbing contests! Mary, like many, loved the cool season of Autumn. Fall was also a season of many firsts...
"Hiya, Jack!" Mary greeted her crush. "Hello." Jack suddenly turned bright tomato red and looked down. There was a moment of akward silence. That scared Mary. Was he, like Gray, going to break her heart? Jack probably saw something in her face and smiled. "Mary, don't worry, this isn't a bad occasion." Mary sighed in relief. "Sssooooo... come in!" Mary invited. Jack smiled and followed her in. Suddenly, Mary tripped! She screamed, and went flying. Jack looked confused for a moment, and then scared. For her...? He dove for her... She landed on her back, eyes scrunched closed. She was in a little pain, but not much... so she opened her eyes. Everything was OK. Her glasses were still on her nose, and unbroken, her clothes weren't ripped, Jack was on top of her... JACK!?! "Oh my GOSH!!" Mary cried, turning pink. Jack smiled sheepishly. His arms were around her head, probably to keep her head from hitting the floor. He leaned in... and thier lips met. They kissed for what seemed like hours. The only thing that made them break apart was a curt knock on the door... and Gray entering the Library. *** Author's Note~ Dundundun! Uh-oh! What will Gray think? Why is he there...? Find out in Chapter 15!

Chapter 15
"Get OFF of her!" Gray shouted, springing forward. He tried to pull Jack off, and succeeded. "Gray! What are you doing here?!" Mary yelled. "Saving you from this jerk!" He replied cooly. Jack, was sitting on the floor, stunned. He looked so sad it made Mary want to cry, but she held it in. "I... I thought you only loved me, Mary." he whispered. "I thought you were a good person. I guess I was wrong." With that, he was gone. "Gray! What did you do?!" Mary cried, tears forming in her dark eyes. "I saved you." he repeated. "What if I didn't need saving! You've already ruined my life. Why do you insist on ruining it more?" Gray was about to say something, but Mary continued. "I was so torn about you leaving me that I closed the Library for weeks! WEEKS! I thought I'd never be happy again! And you didn't even feel sorry! You didn't even say 'good morning' when you ran into me! "And, I finally found someone I loved, and who loved me back! But YOU decided to destroy that, too! Now he'll never talk to me again! Thanks again for ruining my life! Don't you have anything better to do?" Gray stood there, obviously shocked. That was the most he had ever heard Mary say. And, the angriest he had seen her. He gave her a look of anger- and something else. Was it jealousy? Mary hoped so. "GoodBYE!" She said cooly, slamming the door. ***

Chapter 16
Mary stood at the door of her Library, sobbing silently. Why did her life have to be so... so complicated? Every other girl had a nice, easy, life. Not to mention a great relationship. Kai visited Popuri every Summer and they spent most of thier free time together. Karen loved Rick, and it looked like they would get married soon. Ann was infatuated with Cliff, and Cliff was much happier with Ann. And, Elli was always with the Docter, they even slept in the same house, for Pete's sake! And... well, and Blondie had Gray. Wait! Blondie had Gray! So why had Gray come to the Libraray? He couldn't have known Jack was here... so why? Probably to rub it in how great he had it. His girlfriend was a beautiful blonde, and he got gifts all the time. And her? He'd casually ask how she had it. Mary would have sighed, and mumbled, "Well, I've got a great boyfriend that I love tons, I hardly ever think about you, and..." Mary couldn't continue because she was crying so hard.
After a few hours of non-stop crying, Mary decided to do something. Maybe... she'd visit Jack, and apologize. He didn't know about Gray, so he should understand... hopefully. As Mary checked the clock, she decided that it was too late to go now. He'd be eating, or finishing up work. Speaking of eating... Mary was hungry! He stomach made odd noises, so she locked up the Library and went home.
"Mary! Where have you been?" Anna cried. "Sorry, Mom, just lost track of time." Mary explained calmly. "Well, it's 6:50! We were about to eat without you!" "Oh, Mom." Anna sighed, and motioned for Mary to sit down. The food was good, but ,hungry as she had been, Mary was full after just a few small bites. "May I be excused?" "Mary, honey," Basil said, looking worried, "Your mother and I are worried about you! Something must be wrong." Mary managed a weak smile, but shook her head. "N...No. Just overworking, I guess." She yawned hugely (and fakely) "Do you mind if I go to bed now?" "No, darling, go sleep." Anna answered. Mary crawled into bed, and fell asleep thinking if what to say to Jack ***

Chapter 17
Mary yawned a few times before sitting up straight. No! She had fallen asleep before figuring out what to say! But, she would still visit him today, for two reasons. One, she was not one to back down. Not lazy. Not whiner. Two, if she didn't visit him soon, Jack would think he was right, that Mary didn't care for him. And Mary did not want that.
"Good morning, Mary! Feeling better this morning?" asked a cheerful Basil. "Yeah, Dad, I'm fine." Mary assured her father. "OK. Good. Now, since today is the Full Moon Festival, you can leave the Library closed." The Full Moon Festival? She had totally forgotten! This was more urgent than she thought. "Well, since we've got the day off, I'll pick some herbs for you!" Before getting and aswer, she kissed her dad on the cheek and ran out. "Bye Dad!"
Mary took a deep breath. She was standing outside of Jack's house. It was pretty big, too! Old Man's house was tiny, but this one looked as if it already had a Kitchen! She shook her head, forgetting about the house. She didn't come here to admire it, but to talk to Jack. And apologize. And tell the story of her life before he arrived here at Mineral Town. Mary built up her courage, and knocked on the door... ***

Chapter 18
"Mary?" asked a bewildered Jack. "Uh, yes. Good morning!" Mary answered, blushing. Jack's face turned a little stony, but hurt at the same time. "Mary, why are you here? To break up with me? You must love Gra-" "NO!" Mary shouted, surprising Jack. "I used to love him! He broke up with me on my birthday, before you came! Then, you came here. I really liked you from the start, more than I had ever liked Gray. Then, I noticed you liked me, too! And, I began to love you..." She blushed, but continued. "And, I love no one but you! I honestly have no idea why Gray came to the Library, probably to brag about his good luck! And... and I think he's jealous of you, Jack. And I'm glad. I could never love him the way... the way I love you." There was silence. Mary understood. "Sorry for bothering you. I'll leave." As she turned to walk away, Jack grabbed her shoulders, spun her sround, and kissed her. Mary was so surprised, but she didn't care. She kissed him back. She wanted the whole of Mineral Town to see this! Especially Blondie and Gray. Especially Blondie and Gray. As they kissed, Mary knew she had made the right desicion. She was much happier with Jack, than she had ever been with Gray. Maybe... maybe Gray had only loved her as a possesion. To show he had a girlfriend. Maybe hoping he'd get presents, like he got from Blondie. She saw now that they had never had a real relationship, just a sort of possesive one. Not like hers and Jack's. Mary decided to stop thinking altogether, and just enjoy her kiss. This time, nothing could break them apart. ***

Chapter 19
The next day, Mary was in a very good mood. Her life was perfect. Jack and her were officially a couple, and things were going great since she apologized. The Full Moon Festival last night was awesome, too, and it seemed even more beautiful watching it with Jack. To make things better, the Blue Feather was on sale, and there were rumors that Jack had expanded his house to an even bigger size. And, that he was going to propose to-
Mary's thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. Rolling her eyes, Mary walked to the door, calling, "Jack, you KNOW you don't need to-" She stopped short when she saw who was at the door. "Gray! What do you want?" Before he could answer, she added, "You probably just got done telling Jack lies about me, so he'll hate me even more, especially after you came in when we kissed!" She paused for air, and continued. "Well, it won't work, because Jack and I made up yesterday, and we even watched the Full Moon together, too! I told him all about you, so he won't believe a word you say! Neither should I!" Mary looked triumphantly at Gray's quiet face. She didn't have to say more, so she started closing the door. He made no effort to stop it, but the words he spoke were enough to make Mary swing the door open again. "Blondie broke up with me." ***
