Chapter 20
Mary stood there, not knowing what to say. Still, inside her mind, she had so many things to say. Why did he come and tell her? He had other friends...right? Does he actually think she'd feel sorry for him? He DID break up with her on her birthday, after all. Was this another trick? Something to get Jack to hate her? Could this be all in some plan? Something he and many other townspeople had planned? Mary shook her head, still not knowing how to react. "So... why did you tell me?" she causually asked. He looked a little annoyed. "I thought you'd laugh." "Then why would you tell me? I'd find out anyway. Do you want me to laugh?" "No!" "Don't you have anyone else to annoy?" "..." "Well? A ladies guy like you should have tons of friends!" "..." Mary was starting to get annoyed. "If you're not even going to say anything, why did you come?" "Well... you were my girlfriend-" "WERE is the key word." Mary mumbled. "-so I thought you might care." "You thought I might care? Why would I care for someone who broke up with me on my BIRTHDAY?!" Gray stood there, stunned. "It... it was your birthday?" Wrong move. "YOU DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT WAS MY BIRTHDAY!?" Mary screamed, tears forming in her eyes. "... Look. This wasn't going the way I wanted." "Well, what DO you want, Gray? To waste my time? You've already wasted two years of it, when we were together! Don't you think you've wasted enough of my time?" "Look, Mary, I didn't come here to fight!" he roared. Mary shrunk back. "Why, then?" she whispered. He was silent, then looked at her. "I want you back." ***

Chapter 21
Mary stared blankly at him. She was so confused, she felt like she was going to faint. Why did he want her back? He probably wanted to make Blondie jealous, or recieve more of the gifts he loved so much. Or... could he actually care for her, the way Jack did? Was it possible? Gray, actually care for her? The way Mary thought he had when they were still together? Could she be dreaming? Or was this a nightmare? Or, like she thought, a plot that was going to make her look stupid? Or make Jack hate her? "...Well...?" Gray's voice broke the battle of her mind. She shook her head, trying to clear her mind and get rid of the headache she was developing. "...No?" "... I... I haven't decided... yet." What was she thinking? She had Jack now! She didn't need Gray! And, she couldn't stand to see Jack's heart broken, the look on his face when he learned of it! Or, the guilt she would feel. She could never cheat on Jack, either! What if I'd be happier with Gray? a part of her mind asked. What if Jack is playing me, the way Gray was? NO! Jack would never do that! He loves me! But so does Gray! You mean so DID Gray! "Stop!" Mary screamed, holding her head with her hands. She thought her head was going to split in two. Why did a question so simple, be so hard to answer? She loved Jack! She loved Jack! She loved Jack... That was the last thought she had before she blacked out. ***

Chapter 22
"Mary? Mary? Please wake up, Mary. Please..." a voice begged. Mary tried to open her eyes, but it felt like they were made of stone. She tried to move her arm, but it too felt heavier than a ton. "I think she's coming to." another voice said. Mary's eyes suddenly flew open. Her vision was blurry, though she could make out 5... no, 6, figures. She knew Basil and Anna were there- she was thier daughter, after all. The Docter and Elli were probably there, too -if she was in the Clinic, like she suspected. He sight became clearer, and she saw she was at the Hospital. "Mary! Mary, oh Mary, you're awake!" Anna cried, sobbing. Basil was silent, but Mary saw a glistening tear form in his eye. The Docter sighed in relief, and Elli smiled weakly. "You really had the Docter and I worried! You were out for almost six hours!" Elli exclaimed. "Six hours...?" I weakly asked. Elli and the Docter nodded. Mary looked around to see who the two others were. No one was there! "Weren't there two others?" Mary asked. The Docter nodded. "Yes. Two boys. Gray and... what was his name... Jack. I wouldn't let anyone other than family in to see you awaken." "Can... can you please send them in? Jack first, please." Tim nodded and motioned to Elli, who began to walk out. "And... Mom, Dad, can I have some time alone, please?" Basil looked read to argue, but Anna nodded. "Come on, Basil." As they left, Jack ran into the room. His worried face turned into a happy smile when he saw her. "You're OK!" he exclaimed, kissing her. "I was so scared when Anna told me!" "How did she tell you? She walked all the way over to your farm?" He shook his head. "I came to visit you, and when I saw you weren't there, I went to your house and asked. They were scared, and then Anna rushed to the Clinic." Mary gave him a confused look. "You... you didn't carry me here?" "No..." "Then who...?" Jack shrugged. "I'm just happy you're OK. When I find out who carried you here, I'll thank them so many times they'll get annoyed." Mary smiled, but then a thought hit her so hard she layed back down on the pillow. ***

Chapter 23
"Mary! Are you all right?" Jack asked, alarmed. Mary nodded feebly. "Do I need to get the Doct-" "No." she answered quietly. "I... the reason I did that was... a thought hit me." Jack looked utterly confused, but she continued. "Gray came to the Library, and, after I yelled at him, he admitted the reason to why he was there. He... Blondie broke up with him, and he wanted me back. The whole thing was too much for me, and I fainted. I... I think he carried me here..." Jack was looking angry, so Mary pulled the covers up tight. "Jack, I love you, and I'd never cheat on you. Never. Please, don't get mad, he had to do something! Please..." Jack ran a hand through his hair, biting his lip. He was quiet, then said "Well, I guess I should thank him. I mean, if it wasn't for him..." He sighed, and continued. "I'm not mad, Mary. I just am very surprised what he... asked you. I didn't thi-" "OK, Jack, your time is up. Sorry." The Docter called, walking in. Jack looked a little sad, and he kissed her lightly. "Get better... for me, OK?" And with that, he was gone. "Who's the other person who wants to see me?" Mary asked, although she had a feeling she already knew. "Well..." he mumbled something, then added, "I'll send him in." Mary frowned, crossing her arms. Why wouldn't he tell her? Docters. How could Elli actually love him? He was all right, she supposed, but he didn't even know Elli liked him! How would the relationship last? Shaking her head, she looked towards the door. The door creaked softly, and in walked Gray. ***

Chapter 24
Mary said nothing, but layed her head down and turned to the side. "Mary..." he said softly, kneeling down near the bedside. "Please forgive me. Forgive me for being such a jerk to you. I didn't mean it. I should have kept you. You are much better than Blondie, and you always will be. I guess... I was feeling greedy then, and te gifts made me think that she was better for me than you. How wrong I was. I regret everything I did with her. Everything. I regret watching the fireworks with her. I was so jealous of you- but, you probably saw that. I was sad and jealous of how good you had it, and how much you loved Jack. I know it was words that made you faint, and I'm so sorry. If I hadn't been with Blondie, none of this would have happened. You would still be happy, and healthy. All that went through my head as I saw you faint, and I knew the least I could do for causing you all that pain was to carry you. I now know how much you suffered through. I was a jerk, and I'm sorry." The words he spoke touched Mary, but she was still a bit mad at him, and sad. She turned around to face him. She now saw that his face was wet, from silent tears he had cried. Mary understood that this hadn't been a trick. He really did love her, and care for her. Which was going to make the desicion much harder than she had anticipated. ***

Chapter 25
Mary sighed, taking it all in. Jack loved her, but now she found out that Gray does, too! She can't cheat on Jack with Gray, but she couldn't stand to see Gray's face if she stayed with Jack. How would she handle this? She knew that Gray still might be tricking her, but the look on his face didn't seem like it. "OK, mister Gray, your time is up!" Tim yelled, bursting in the door. Mary rolled her eyes. No respect. "Bye, Mary," Gray shyly said, and waved a little. Asfter he had left and Mary had shooed the Docter away, she was still troubled. She'd never be able to make up her mind! Jack and Gray would get old, and when one of them dies she'd marry the other! NO! Don't think like that! she scolded herself. You're smart, and obviously you can make up your mind about you who love more! But... it was more than that! Mary suddenly realized. It was also the guy who loved her more, but also repceted her, and would never try to change the way she was (unlike *cough*CLIFF*cough*). Mary rested her head on the pillow. She felt almost all better so, she'd go home soon. Maybe even today! The time read 7:50, so maybe not today after all. Tomarrow, then! Tomarrow she would go home... and, make her desicion. She knew that if she waited any longer, the guilt would kill her. ***

Chapter 26
Mary stood in her Library, hand cupped under her chin. She was deep in thought, thinking about who to pick. She hadn't had much time earlier, because Gray and Jack (who had somehow figured out that Mary would choose one of them) had visited at least 10 times each, every time with gifts. Mary had so many Herbs and Relaxation Tea she could set up her own Clinic! But, finally, Mary had used her brain and closed the Library. That had aggrivated Gray and Jack, who had both tried to sweet-talk her into opening the door because they had 'a surprise'. Pfft. Mary didn't need nor want any more stupid gifts. They wouldn't win her over, anyway. Obviously, Gray and Jack hadn't yet figured that out. After a few minutes of staring, Mary decided to get out of the Library. Too many things happened here. She should go somewhere where there was peace. More importantly, a place where Jack and Gray would never find her. Mary snuck out the back door and rushed towards Mother's Hill. She knew that they'd never find her there, they'd still be getting more gifts and begging to let them in.
Mary sighed peacefully. She was by top of Mother's Hill, thankfully, alone. Finally, somewhere where no one, not even her parents, would think to look. Except maybe Basil. Mary was closest to him, and could trust him. Anyway, she should start thinking! She HAD promised herself that she'd make up her mind today. She thought a good way to start was to list all the good things, and bad, about them both. She'd start with Jack. GOOD~ * He was always there for her when Gray was with Blondie * They'd been to many festivals together * There were rumors he'd marry her soon * He seemed to be a great person to talk to, and had many things to say * He treated her very kindly all the time * He was very protective, but not so much that he treated her as a possesion * He'd make a very reliable husband, not one to walk out or cheat on her * He liked her for who she was BAD~ * If she chose him, she wouldn't have much time of her own, and he'd be busy all the time * The only day's off they'd have together are holidays * If they had a child, Mary'd have to take care of it all the time she wasn't at work, and it'd have to stay in bed alone all day * The child they had might not grow up in the best way, as Mary'd be at work 6 days a week, and Jack all the time. It might not be social, either.
Those were all the things she could think of at the moment. That totaled up as 8 good, 4 bad. Now, for Gray. ***

Chapter 27
GOOD~ * He seemed to like her for who she was * He really did love her, and it showed * He, like Jack, was protective, but not too much * Thier child would grow up in a good way, as Mary would be off 2 days a week, and Gray one. It'd know the father better this way, too * He seemed very reliable * Gray did seem truly sorry for what he had done earlier * Mary had known him longer, and better. She knew all his secrets, and he knew hers * Gray, although a hard worker, would always have time for her. Jack, on the other hand, would only have holidays
BAD~ * Where would they live? There was no room in Mary's house, nor Saibara's! Would they reside at the Inn? * Since Gray wasn't the most social person ever, would thier child believe that he didn't love them? * Although seeming sincere, did Gray really love her, or was it a fraud? She couldn't decide! * What if Gray didn't want a child? Mary loved kids, but she didn't know if Gray did or not. Would they live alone forever?
And, the total came out... 8 good, 4 bad. It was a tie. ***
