Jenrya: Here’s the second chapter… Terriermon: Hi! I’m Terriermon! Jenrya: (swings his Mystril hammer around) WHACK Terriermon:......... (moans) Jenrya: Ok, as I said before… let’s get on with the fic!
Chapter two
‘Goodness me… what a mess he left me with’ Jack thought as he looked at the fluffy clouds above him. His thought was quickly replaced with images of him and his granddad having fun on the farm. Jack shook out of his daydreams.
He unlocked the door and entered what was going to be his home for probably his whole life. It was, well… small… but cozy. He dropped his bags and scanned the whole farm house.
“Well, at least someone cleaned it out”, Jack said to himself.
‘What’s wrong here?’ Then, it hit him. ‘This is great. Just a few hours here in Mineral Town and you start talking to yourself Jack! There I go again… DAMN!’ At that thought, he left the house and slammed the door behind him.
Jack looked around the farm. He quietly thanked his granddad for leaving him with the farm. Sure it needed some work, but it’ll be great soon. He saw that his granddad kept the farm as simple as it was back then. There’s a chicken coop, a barn, a stable, a dog house and that place where you keep the logs.
‘Man, Jenrya needs to work on his vocabularies’ Jack thought.
Jack then exited his farm and started walking. He didn’t really know where he was headed for since he hasn’t been to this town for a long, long time. He saw a building and read the sign.
‘The Blacksmith eh? I should drop in on everyone, right?’ he sighed.
He knocked on the door. There was no answer. He then looked at his watch. 7.00 am. He sighed again. He wasn’t a morning person too but today was an exception since it was the first day of his completely new life. He decided that he should continue his walk since no one was going to answer to the blacksmith’s door.
As he walked on, he passed what looked like a farm. Having a second look at it, he saw a few chickens flapping around. Then he read the sign in front of the farm. Poultry Farm.
‘Should have guessed’ he thought. He smiled and imagined how he’ll have to start raising chickens soon to fill in the emptiness of the chicken coop.
“Hi there!” a voice came from behind Jack as a hand descended from the heavens above onto his right shoulder. Jack jumped in total surprise and turned around to see the owner of the hand that was on his shoulders.
Jack put on a weak smile since he was still recovering from the sudden surprise. What he saw in front of him was another boy, from what he saw, it seems that the boy was probabbly older than he was...
‘Thank goodness it’s a human’ he thought.
“I’m Rick. And you must be that new farmer, right?” Rick asked. Jack nodded. Jack saw that Rick was dressed in a green long-sleeved shirt, brown pants and a white apron. He also had glasses on.
“Yeah, I’m Jack. Nice to meet you this early in the morning” Jack said. 'What a way to kill a conversation' he thought. He sighed at his attempt to cover up his surprised state.
“It is early isn’t it? I don’t normally walk around the farm this early… Must be a coincidence eh? Anyway, this here is the poultry farm. My family runs it. My mother tends to the customers while me and my younger sister take care of the chicken”, Rick explained. Jack did the only thing he could do and nodded.
“Sorry but my mum and Popuri are probably getting themselves ready so you might not be able to meet them yet at the moment… But you won’t miss seeing my sister; you’ll probably stumble into her when walking into town. She’s the girl with bright pink hair. Anyway, I have to feed these chickens so I have to go. See you around”, Rick added as he made his way to the chickens. Jack then went on with his walking and came upon another farm. Well, he saw that there were cows and sheep outside, so this would probably be a ranch. He walked in and took in the scene.
Suddenly, he heard a dog woofed from behind him. Jack turned around and saw that the dog was at his feet now, waging its tail and cuddling up to him. He picked it up and gave a cuddle. Then, he saw two figures coming up to him. One of them was a bald old man, while the other was a young girl with long brown hair. Jack thought he should probably introduce himself since he did barge in uninvited.
“Hi there, I’m Jack and I’m the new…” Jack was in the middle of his sentence when the old man cut him off.
“The new farmer eh? Well Jack, I must say that you do look a little like you granddad at your age, but I must say that you look a lot happier tha he was back then when he first got the farm… Oh, I almost forgot. I’m Barley, the owner of this here Yodel Ranch. And this little missie here is my cute little granddaughter, May”. Barley held up his hand and shook Jack’s.
“And I can see that you’ve met our lil’ Hanna. I sell cows and sheep in this town, so if you’d like to buy some later on in the year, just drop by ok?” Barley asked as he took Hanna back from Jack. Hanna yelp as Jack nodded.
“Hey, thanks. Don’t worry, you’ll be seeing me around, as long as I can get the farm fixed here and there… Anyway, nice meeting you Barley and May”, Jack replied. Barley smiled and May gave Jack one of those little girl giggles. Jack bid farewell to the two and made his was out of the Ranch.
“Now, where am I supposed to go?” Jack asked aloud. He was thinking too hard and didn’t notice a figure coming from behind him.
“Hi there stranger!” a girl screamed out. Jack, as always, was totally surprised and jumped even higher than before. He grabbed hold of a branch on a tree nearby and hung from the tree until the little branch gave way. Jack fell with a loud thud which hurted his back a little. He moaned and rubbed his head.
“Oh, sorry about that… I shouldn’t have screamed into your ears right?” the girl asked. Jack gave a little painful nod and sighed. The girl giggled while having one oh her hands to cover her mouth.
“Umm… I don’t think we’ve met before right? I’m Ann. My dad runs the Inn over there. Hey, since you’re new, why don’t I show you around? By the way, what’s your name?” Ann asked. Jack slowly stood up and put on a little smile.
“I’m Jack and I’ll be running the farm from this point on”, Jack answered. “And I’d like that a lot, thanks for volunteering to show me around”.
So, Ann and Jack made their way around town. First, Ann showed Jack the town square where most of the festivals are held. Then, Ann introduced Jack to her dad, Doug and showed him around the Inn. Ann then took Jack to the winery where he met Manna and Duke.
“Manna’s the mouth of the town. If you want to here any rumors, then you should come here”, Ann whispered into Jack’s ears. Jack chuckled.
Ann then took Jack to the town’s Library where he met Mary. Mary introduced herself and told Jack that there were many books on farming and he should try spending some time at the library in the near future. Jack nodded. Mary then handed Jack a library card. After bidding farewell to Mary, Ann and Jack knocked on the door of Basil’s house. There, Jack met Basil and Anna. Then they made their way to Ellen’s house.
“Watch out!” a boy shouted as Ann opened the door to Ellen’s house. Suddenly, a bag of flour flew straight into Ann’s face. In an instance, Ann was all covered in flour. Jack giggled and saw that there was a little boy at the doorstep, also in a fit of giggles.
“This here is naughty old Stu”, Ann introduced Jack to Stu. “Well, I’ll have to go home and get changed now, don’t I? Anyway Jack, we’ve covered a lot of ground already so you’d have no problem finishing the rest… Bye, hope to see you again soon”. With that, Ann gave Jack a little peck on the cheek. Jack blushed a little but then he started laughing since Ann got flour onto his face. Ann joined in and waved as she made her way out.
“Hi there Jack… Come in and take a seat. Sorry but I can’t get up to greet you with my conditions”, and old woman greeted him. Jack nodded and took a seat at the dining table. “By the way, I’m Ellen and this is my grandson, Stu”.
“Hi there big brother, want to play with me?” Stu asked. Ellen shook her head. Jack scratched his head and sweat dropped.
“I think Jack’s got a lot of work to do. And you have a lot of work to do too young man! You’ll have to clean all this up before Elli gets home or she’ll be furious. And we don’t want to trouble her, do we?” Ellen asked. Stu shook his head. Jack smiled. Stu reminded himself of his cousin back in the big city. He knew what to do.
“Don’t worry Stu, I’m going to be here from now on so I’ll come and play some other time ok? Now you’ll have to clean up this mess before Elli gets here… Who’s Elli anyway?” Jack asked.
“She’s my granddaughter. She’s a nurse and works at the clinic with the Doctor”, Ellen explained. Jack nodded. Stu beamed up at him.
“Ok big brother, come and play another time!” he said. With that, Jack stood up and patted Stu on the head. He waved to Ellen and went out of the house. Next, he saw the Mayor’s house, which he had already visited that very morning. He then made his way to the Supermarket. Inside, he saw four people. He stood there, not knowin what to do.
“Hi! You must be Jack! My brother told me about you. I never knew you were a lot cuter than what I imagined. By the way, how was your trip? What is it like in the big city? Why…” then the girl trailed off as another girl pulled her away. From the looks of it, the girl with the pink hair and the chatterbox mouth must be Popuri.
“I’m Karen. It’s nice to meet you Jack. My family runs this supermarket. My Dad, Jeff tends to the counter while my mum, Sasha tends to the stock and does all the paperwork. While I…” Karen was cut off by her mum.
“…just hangs around, doing absolutely nothing”. Sasha laughed as she saw her daughter fumed at her comment. Popuri and Jeff also joined in the laugh.
“Well Jack, since you are new to the farming world, here’s a few bags of turnip seeds for you to get a kick start on the farm”, Jeff said as he handed Jack four bags of turnip seeds. Jack reached into his pocket to hand over gold to Jeff but Jeff stopped him. “It’s on the house, as long as you do business with us in the near future!”
Jack thanked Jeff and was making his way out. He stopped when he heard Karen shouting. He turned back and saw that Popuri was whispering and giggling while Karen was disapproving something.
“Oh, just this once!” Popuri pleaded. Karen gave up and agreed. The next thing that happened shocked Jack. Both girls came up to him, and gave him a little peck on both cheeks. Jack blushed furiously. Popuri giggled while Karen sweat dropped. At the sudden shock, Jack smiled to both of them and then made his way out. Next, he went to the clinic to greet Elli and whoever that’s there.
“Welcome to the clinic. May I help you?” Elli said with her head down, focusing on something she was writing. Jack walked up to the counter. He looked down at Elli and only saw her hair. Elli noticed that her work area was covered with shadow from the person in front of the counter so she then looked up. Mystical brown eyes met Jack’s hazel eyes, and for a minute, the world around them was lost. Then, noticing that they were staring at each other for long enough, Jack blushed furiously and stumbled back a few inches and accidentally fell down with a thud. Elli was shocked out of her trance and came running to Jack.
“Are you ok?” Elli asked. Jack’s face was bright red. Elli put her hand on his forehead and felt that Jack was burning up. Elli panicked but then was calmed down by someone that came to sit next to her.
“Don’t worry, he’ll be fine… It’s not a fever, it’s something more complicated”, the person explained, sighed and sweat dropped. Jack then snapped out of his trance and sweat dropped. He didn’t mean to cause all this commotion.
“Sorry about all this… I’m Jack, the new farmer”, he introduced himself.
“See, I told you he’d be ok. Anyway, I’m the doctor and this here is Elli, our town’s nurse” The doctor added. Jack again blushed at the sight of Elli, who did the same exact thing. The doctor sighed and sweat dropped. He made his way back to his desk. “By the way Jack, come see me anytime if you’re not feeling well”. Jack nodded. Both he and Elli got up at the same time and knocked into each other’s heads.
“Sorry…” For the first time in Mineral Town, Jack was lost for words. He blushed even more as Elli smiled.
“Don’t worry about it. I’m a nurse, I’ll be ok… You should get going now…” Elli said shyly as her face got closer to Jack’s and pecked him on the cheeks. Jack turned a crimson red. He tried to wave his hands but it didn’t work out to well. He then made his way out.
“Well Elli, I see that someone’s got a crush on you…” The doctor joked which made Elli blushed even more.
Outside, Jack was still affected by Elli’s peck on his cheek. He wasn’t really looking where he was going since he could only picture Elli in his head. Then suddenly, he crashed hard into someone.
“Ouch!” he heard a young boy moaned. He got up and snapped out of his day dreams. In front of him was a young boy, about his age sitting on the ground, taking in the aftermath of their impact. The boy rubbed his chest and straightened his shirt. He pulled down his blue cap.
“I’m really, really sorry… I wasn’t looking where I was going”, Jack apologized. He just got the silent treatment from the other boy who wasn’t exactly looking at him. He held out his hand to pull the other boy up. The boy startled and shyly looked up at Jack who was putting on his best face. The boy took Jack’s hand and stood up.
“I haven’t met you, have I? My name’s Jack, I’m the new farmer and I’ll be taking over the farm from now on. May I know who you might be?” Jack asked. He was trying his hardest to make up for his clumsiness.
The boy hesitated at first to say his name as he looked away. He then saw Jack’s brightened up face and sighed. “Gray” he said and then he fell into silence again. Jack didn’t like the awkwardness of the event and held out his hand once again. Gray looked confused.
“Sorry about what happened before. Anyway, let’s be friends. I think we’ll be good friends with each other”, Jack explained. Gray didn’t know what to do. He didn’t like the word 'friends' that came out of Jack’s mouth. Gray fell into silence again.
‘How can I be your friend when I don’t even know what friends really are?’
(Author’s note) Jenrya: So, that was the end of this chapter. Terriermon: And it’s quite a long chapter too… Jenrya: Sorry about that… I just got carried away… Anyway… Terriermon: Please R & R! Jenrya: That was my line! You are so… (takes out his mystril hammer) Terriermon: See you on the next chapter! (runs as fast as it could avoiding stepping onto its long ears)
