Breaking the Habit

Chapter 1: Twenty-One Days

Eyes fixed on the cement pathway that streched in front of her, her feet shuffled noislessly across the rocky surface. Head bowed as she passed under low branches of pine trees, she looked up momentarily. Her knees grew weak and she dropped lower, feeling as if she had been burned when her eyes met his figure and she turned away. Her head was spinning, making her feel dizzy and sick. Go, one part of her mind told herself. Go speak to him. But she knew. She knew that if her eyes met his she wouldn't be able to say anything, her tongue would swell up, and she'd walk away, hair and face matching in shades crimson.

As if she'd have the courage to even walk up to him, anyway.

And even though her mind persisted, her body was stronger, and continued on as if she had not even noticed him. Besides, she told herself, trying to look on the bright side. I have a reputation to keep. "Contrary to the song," she murmured, shaking her head slightly. "Life is not a bowl of cherries." She dared one last look before she quickened her pace.

Back at home, her head was still caught in the clouds and she had faint tingles running up and down her legs. She pulled off her vest, still in a daze, and set it down on the counter. She pulled out a chair and sat at the kitchen table, a dreamy look on her face. Had it not been for the smoke, she could have spent the rest of the day dreaming.


"Dammit!" She swore loudly, yanking her vest off the stove and throwing it to the ground, stomping on it a couple of times until the flames were extinguished. Ranting under her breath, she poured herself a cup of tea. Twenty-one days to break a habit, that's what they said. Twenty-one days to get him completely out of her mind.


Shorter chapters for this one, but they should come sooner.
