Chapter six: Points of view
Katie ran to the clinic, feeling so guilty that she hadn’t been there whenever this had happened to Jack. Why had she left without telling him?! Now the sky was a pinkish orange color, as the sun set over the ocean. She had been sleeping for a couple hours...
When Katie got to the clinic, she burst in the door, surprising Alex, the doctor, who was sitting in his desk. “Can I help you?” he asked Katie. She nodded. “Is Jack here?” Alex pointed toward a curtained room and said: “Visiting time is only for another hour so you’ll have to hurry.” Katie nodded and opened the curtain walking in the room.
When she entered the room, Jack was propped up against some pillows staring out the window. As she walked over to him, he looked over at her and a huge smile spread across his face. “Katie?” he asked, almost unsure that it was really her. Katie nodded. “Are you all right?” she asked him worriedly. Jack grunted. “Yeah! I wanna get outta here, but Martha and Alex insist that I stay. I’m perfectly fine... I just overworked.” he looked down guiltily, as if he was hiding something. Katie blinked and stared at him through soft eyes.
“I’m so sorry I haven’t been here. I had to visit my grandmother, and I was in a hurry, and...” her voice trailed off here. Jack smiled. “It’s okay.” he replied softly. Katie looked up at him, and their eyes met. “Is something else wrong?” she asked him, sensing some different pain from him. He wasn’t just tired... Jack blinked and sighed. “It’s just... Gwen and I had a fight and... Well, you must hate me...” Katie gasped. “Jack! I’d never hate you! Why...” she stopped talking when she realized what the fight he had had with Gwen was about. “Jack, I don’t hate you because of some stupid accident.” she told him. “It wasn’t your fault and... I’d never hate you for something like that.” she said. Jack smiled. “Really?” he asked. Katie nodded. “Katie...” he looked down nervously. “What is it?” she asked kindly.
“Will you... Will you... Will you go to the Flower festival with me?” he asked shyly. “Jack... Oh... Wow...” she said, shocked. Jack blinked. “I understand if you don’t want to... I was just-“ Just then a smile spread across Katie’s face. “Of course I want to Jack! I’d love to!” she said, jumping on top of Jack and hugging him. He smiled too. “Really?” he asked. She nodded happily and hugged him again, laughing and smiling the whole time.

Gwen sat on the bridge by the river, her feet sitting in the water. She listened to the sounds around her, but didn’t notice when someone sat down next to her.
“Hey Gwen.” they said. Surprised, Gwen jumped up, about to scream, when she suddenly fell into the river. When she surfaced up she swore angrily. “God, this sucks!” she yelled. She looked up to see who had talked to her and saw one of the craft maker’s apprentices, Joe, staring back at her, an embarrassed look on his face. “I’m sorry! Are you okay?” he asked guiltily. She blinked some water out of her eyes and nodded, reaching up on the bridge to get out of the river. She was about to pull herself up, when Joe helped her up himself. Gwen blushed.
“T-thanks.” she said. He nodded. “I’m sorry,” he said again. “Want me to take you home?” Gwen blinked. “Umm... You don’t have to...” she replied, but Joe shook his head. “C’mon!” he said and set off with her following him embarrassedly.
They walked in silence until Joe asked Gwen if she was going to the Flower festival. She blinked, surprised he had asked. “Um... I guess. Are you?” she replied. He shrugged. “I was going to ask Katie but-“ Gwen cut him off quickly, remembering how bad Jack had wanted to go with Katie. “She’s going with someone! I mean... I heard that...” she said talking without thinking. Joe looked down sadly. “Oh...” he said, and Gwen felt a little bad.
When they got to the Inn, Gwen stood in the doorway. She thanked him, and just as she was about to close the door, Joe stopped her. “Gwen, will you go to the flower festival with me?” he asked, his cheeks suddenly turning pink with embarrassment. Gwen froze. She almost never had any conversations with Joe, and would have never thought that he would ask her to the event. “Umm... Well...” she knew that she wouldn’t be able to bare saying no and watch him get upset again, so she said: “Yeah... Yeah I’ll go with you.” Joe smiled. “Really? Great! Thanks!” he said, and walked off happily. Gwen sighed, still standing in the doorway, dripping wet.
~*~*~*~
Jack sat in the dark bed at the clinic. He stared at the ceiling and wondered if Gwen had been here earlier when he had been sleeping. He shifted his head a little bit, and hit the small night stand by his bed. “Ow!” he whispered into the dark, and a card, or something, fell on his face. Jack picked it up and turned on his light. He saw that the picture was of two children with their arms around each other. One had long braids and the other had a hat on that was covering his face. Jack turned it around, and saw some familiar writing on it. It said:
Jack- I found this in a box and thought you might want it. -Gwen
Jack blinked and suddenly felt his heart drop. He had to apologize to Gwen. She had been right and he had doubted her. Jack jumped out of bed, and then remembering to be quiet, switched off the light and pulled on some jeans and shoes before he tiptoed into the lobby where Alex sat sleeping with his head on his desk. Jack opened the door as quietly as he could, and ran to the Inn.
When he walked in, there were a few people, eating their food and chatting. Jack snuck past them, and into Gwen’s room where she lay on her bed reading a book. When Jack entered she glanced over at him, and then got up quickly.
“Jack? What are you doing here?!” she asked, surprised. Jack smiled.
“I’m here to apologize.” he told her. She blinked. “Why? I’m the one who needs to apologize. It’s my fault all of this happened! I shouldn’t have said anything to Katie!” she said guiltily.
Jack shook his head. “No... Gwen you were right. I never would have told her, and she doesn’t even really... care.” Gwen sighed. “This is all my fault...”
Jack looked at her sadly, feeling bad. He had been a bad friend, making her feel this awful. “It’s not your fault Gwen! It’s mine! I’m so sorry! I never should have made you feel so bad! I was stupid!” he confessed.
Gwen looked up at him, and he could see how sad she looked, almost close to tears. Suddenly, Jack knew what the right thing to do was. He walked over to his friend and pulled her into a hug. Suddenly he heard her give a little sob, and then she started crying, letting her tears fall, and looking away from him. Jack shook his head. “I’m so sorry Gwen... I’m so sorry.” he said, trying to comfort her. She sniffed, and turned to face him. “Jack... I was so scared that day... When you passed... passed out. I thought...that... I thought that we would never... n-never...be friends again....” She said in between sobs. Jack had never seen her cry so hard, and he felt, for maybe the first time with Gwen, awkward. He blinked and put a comforting hand on her shoulder. For a moment, Jack thought he understood what she was trying to say, that she thought they wouldn’t be best friends when he got mad at her... But why?
Shaking his head, knowing it didn’t matter why, Jack said: “Gwen, we’ll always be best friends! No fight or anything is going to change that. I’m sorry I acted so stupid...” Just then, Jack remembered something he hadn’t seen in a while, and he held up his hand, where an old scar was on the right side of his palm. Gwen looked up and smiled through her tears, also holding up her hand, where the same scar was. Suddenly, she jumped onto him, and pulled him into a hug, laugh crying. Jack smiled widely.
“I’m a lucky guy.” He said, and Gwen nodded and whispered to him, “Best friends forever.”
