Kai's New Friend!
By S. Storme Jaraba
It was a dismal rainy day by the shore as Kai tried to collect all his things together for his date with Popuri, "Great... Just when I need a romantic sky..." he complained before grabbing his blue feather and darting out the door.
"Kai! Oh you're here!" Popuri smiled with glee at her boyfriend's face, "I'm so glad you're here! It raining too heavily out here, my mom says we'll have to stay inside."
(OH, great..... another bummer!) Kai thought as he was brought inside. He was greeted by two bowls of soup, he didn't know which, and some bread set neatly on the table.
"Wow! This looks good, huh Kai?" Popuri giggled.
Kai slowly nodded back, "Hey Popuri... I need to ask you something..."
"Well what is it?" Pouri smiled happily at him, her face glowing.
"It'll have to wait until after dinner you two, you look starved!" Lillia said calmly as she washed a apir of cups and set them on the table.
"Mommy! Aren't you supposed to be resting?" Popuri worried.
"I'm feeling well enough today to fix your dinner." Lillia knew about the blue flower, and wanted to see him propose.
As they ate they heard some noises outside, "Oh what could be causing that?" Popuri asked softly before taking another sip of her soup.
"I'll go check..." Kai stood up, "Where's Rick anyhow?"
"He's got a fever, so he's up in his room, hopefully in bed." Lillia smiled. her and Popuri looked so much alike, they both had the same amount of beauty.
Kai opened the doors and walked out. He continued to hear the noises from the chick house, "Oh, great.. Hey don't be eating any chicks you hear!" Kai thought it was probably a dog or something, so he charged towards the doors and swung them open, trying to scare the dog off.
Instead of seeing a dog, he saw a curled up person. It had long brown hair. Kai couldn't tell with exact coller it was because it was so dirty. The person raised it's head to show it was a boy. A boy with pale blue eyes. His clothes were ripped and old, and looked a little too big on him anyways. Cuts and open wounds looked like they were infected with dirt and other things. He was skinny as could be, almost showing bones.
"A-Are you okay, sir...?" Kai asked softly. The boy cringed with the voice and lowered his head again.
"I-I'll go... I'm sorry I came in here but I needed a place to sleep..." the boy said, his voice was clear and smooth, yet soft and kind.
"No, no... You need to get inside for some food... You look really unhealthy..." Kai walked over and started to help the boy up, but the boy couldn't stand. Kai looked at the boy's frail, skinny body, "I'll carry you then." he swung an arm down and picked the boy up with ease.
"Popuri! Lillia!" Kai opened the doors as the two women rushed over to help him carry the boy to a couch.
"What happened? Who is this?" Popuri asked.
"My name... is Lionel." the boy said quietly. Popuri looked down at his body.
"My goddess...." she said under her breath.
The next day when it was better outside they called Dr. Tim to the house, not wanting to exhaust Kai or Lionel with walking across the entire neighborhood.
Tim warmed his stethoscope and put it on Lionel's chest; His breathing was crackly, but strong. He then felt over Lionel's stomach, "Does this hurt at all?"
"A little... It feels pressured..." Lionel said quietly. Elli walked over with a warm cloth and thermometer.
Tim slid the thermometer under Lionel's tongue. A few moments passed before he took it out again, "102.2" Tim said quietly as Elli put the towel over Lionel's forehead, "Rest and food is what he needs. This week keep him on a diet of soups and liquids. His body can't handle any solids yet." Tim stood up and straightened his coat, "Give him some fever redusers and he should be fin in about a month."
