Older HM games used to have an evaluation after 2 1/2 to 3 years of game-play. Your father, or the townspeople would evaluate your progress on the farm, and the game would end (though sometimes you could continue afterwords). The ending scenes varied depending on how "good" or "bad" you did.
This hasn't been a feature in HM games in a long time. The games are even more open-ended, but you have a less specific goal. This could be the reason why sub-plots like rescuing the goddess have been added.
I sort of miss the old evaluations.
Your thoughts?

I do sort of miss the old evaluations. It was nice to see how good or bad I had done. Now I never really know how well I have done, so i am usually left wondering about it. In the old games I actually had goals to work towards and good scenes to watch depending on how well i had done.

yeah, having an evaluation kinda gets you more motivated to do stuff. <_< i mean, sometimes i slack off on farming if i'm not really aiming to accomplish something.

I agree with moko: It's nice to actually be working for something.

I thought I'd bump this since I recently had my farm evaluated in HM64 and it really made me miss the old evaluations. Yeah, rescuing the Goddess (again), perfecting the bazaar or uniting the towns can be satisfying, but really nothing compares to having your dad come to the farm and having everyone in town praise your efforts.

It really does feel good to see how much of a difference you've made, doesn't it?

Even though I like the old evaluation system, I would rather it be left in the shelf than be revived. The reason is that most Harvest Moon games created in our modern day would not compliment the old ways of gameplay. Games are far too complex, and I would feel that I was cheated out of time by worrying over score as opposed to doing what is most important, enjoying the game.
Even so, I would love to see more of the old stuff we could do. Like everything that we could do would have some sort of positive consequence or reward when doing something. Actions influencing events and even the feelings of the villagers (especially the bachelors/bachelorettes). I don't see that anymore, everything just seems so "robotic" and scripted. Nothing surprises you since nothing you do matters unless you have a certain number of hearts by dumping the same gift over and over and over and over to a specific individual.

I do appreciate the dating system in TToTT for that reason. I see character depth and reaction. Also the contests affecting relationships between the towns makes me feel like a villager, not a bystander. Same for the individual festivals.
