This has been ongoing for a long time. I have trouble falling asleep sometimes, or I wake up and have trouble falling back asleep. It tends to get worse around the time of my period.
Any suggestions?

It's pretty late now and I don't have the handout with me, so tomorrow I'll type up some of the suggestions from a sleep pamphlet I got last year. If your trouble falling asleep is caused by hormones then it might not be of help, but it would be worth a shot since most of the suggestions don't cost money. One thing I can remember that has helped me a ton is a humidifier. This is the one I have and it's kind of loud, but the white noise is very calming and it blocks out a lot of the sounds that used to keep me up. A fan or anything that makes a sort of mechanical noise could help, too.

I usually do have a fan running; I can't sleep if the room is too quiet.

If it isn't a problem, maybe take a quick HOT shower?

What usually helps me is that I try to remember (in excruciating detail) something either really boring or complicated.
Typically, I try to remember (line by line, if I can) the plot of a really boring or really stupid movie, or (I kid you not) the order of the first 150 Pokemon. I go even further if necessary, although I don't think I know the exact order beyond the first generation.

I might have to try that TBustah!. I remember boring myself to sleep when I was little. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear it. I got about two hours of sleep last night.

I've been sleeping better lately. I cut down on caffeine. I'd gotten trapped in this cycle of not getting enough sleep which made me tired in the afternoon so I had some coffee so that I wouldn't conk out at 4pm which left me too wired to sleep.
I still have some problems as the caffeine wasn't the sole cause, but it's been better.

I was going to tell you, my mom cut her caffeine out after about 2pm, made all the difference in the world. If you like milk, calcium tablets with milk help. If you don't like milk, make a smoothie.
Also try herbal tea(my hubbie is crazy and says lace it with something, don't listen to the crazy male...)

It's been worse the last two weeks. I had to get up much earlier than usual one day for work, and I couldn't catch up. And then, well, like I said in my first post, it tends to get worse right before and during my period.
Now, if I feel tired in the afternoon, what is my best option? Taking a nap? Having coffee? Tea? Soda? I usually try and force myself to stay awake, but that sometimes means I get my second wind and can't sleep

Wish I could make suggestions, but I've never really been that kind of insomniac. The worst I do is 'cycle' when I don't have a reason to set the alarm. I stay awake for 14-16 hours, and then crash for 12.

Wish I had advice for you Butters. I don't know whether it's because of college or I'm just crazy, but for the past few months I've gone weeks with just a couple of hours of sleep. It sucks... I'M ALWAYS BUSY.
