B&V Double Digest #170 is the latest entry in the Archie Comics Dynamic New Look series. Somehow I missed Moose and Midge's Break Up Blues, which was presumably about domestic violence, but I'm here to report on MY FATHER'S BETRAYAL!
Veronica, Betty, Archie, Jughead and Reggie visit an old-growth forest, conveniently located just outside of Riverdale. This forest is a special spot for Veronica, who would play there when she was little and had no friends. The gang learns the forest is being torn down to make way for a new factory and industrial park! Veronica is outraged and decides to call upon the champion of the environment, Captain Planet! Er, that is Hiram Lodge.
But in a shocking twist, Mr. Lodge is the one behind the development! It turns out the issue isn't so black and white as it would seem: the new factory and industrial park will provide much-needed jobs and lower property taxes. Nevertheless, Veronica and Betty decide they can protest and start a petition and Veronica declares that Mr. Lodge is now her ENEMY!
The art is decent, not great. As usual, Betty, Veronica and Archie look pretty good in the new styles and Reggie, as usual, looks pretty awful. Betty actually looks like a teenager! So does Jughead for that matter. Problem there is, Juggie looks too young!
I do like that they presented the gray areas of the issue. Archie Comics can be pretty anvilicious when it comes to the environment, so actually showing the upsides to the new factory is almost shocking. But considering that construction work has already begun, isn't it a little late to protest? I get that teenagers aren't going to to be up on the latest news in industrial parks and that they want to save the forest, but it's a little like locking the barn after the horse has escaped, you know?
