I'm pretty sure all those old games used Shockwave in the beginning, not Flash. It's in the name.
Shockwave isn't used as much anymore, ever since Adobe bought Macromedia. Everything just uses Flash now. Macromedia actually used to have trouble maintaining the two as separate products, so Adobe more or less discontinued Shockwave when they bought them out.
I actually had to find, download, and install Shockwave (no easy task, because Adobe doesn't really support it anymore) to play the Cartoon Cartoon Resort series again, because I didn't have it on this computer. It's used so little anymore that I simply didn't need it before.

Yeah, I remember seeing the Shockwave thing whenever I loaded a game. Now I don't really play those games but someday I might come across an old game ;w;

Excuse me while I go install a copy of Shockwave for my relic titles.
EDIT: Speaking of which, I remember when MECC was the reigning king of computer games, and edutainment was the default genre.

W00TNESS FOR MECC!
I miss them so much, there's never been a better version of Oregon Trail since they sold out in my opinion.
Wow, haven't thought of Shockwave for years....

We've still got some version of Oregon Trail, as well as Opening Night (another MECC program) installed on our old computer.
I don't really touch either anymore, but my brother still screws around with Opening Night from time to time.

I have the Oregon Trail II 25th Anniversary edition, which has making of videos and all previous versions of Oregon Trail. I USED to have the strategy guide that came with the set, but I lost it. Though I memorized it first, no jokes.

Siforkids.com was another one that had a decent selection of games. I've never really been into sports, it was the only reason I ever visited. The only reason I even knew about it is that my brother subscribed to the magazine at the time.
Pretty much anything with Buzz Beamer, and the Jupiter Unagi games were good. I didn't find out what "unagi" meant until just a few years ago, when I tried it in a sushi bar in Carson City. XD

I remember when they were working on the first Kingdom Hearts, they had the most beautiful website...
I also remember when I first came up with my first username, FFXplayer. I loved Final Fantasy X at the time, and it looked just like something people used on the internet!

Newgrounds!
It's still around today, but it's more about Flash and other submissions in general, and not just the kind of crass, immature, and age-inappropriate stuff that can get a kid in serious trouble with his parents. ;D
Most of it is still on there, but a few things (like some of the Lego videos) have mysteriously vanished.

My youngest brother has become a Newgrounds addict recently. I can't help but feel a subtle sense of shame towards that.

If it was the same site it was in the late 90's, sure.
But like I said, there's all sorts of stuff on there now, not just crass garbage.

That's why I feel the shame. He might as well be a MySpace dweeb...
