It's not very popular. Probably because you have so much time to kill and so little to do, and because it's not very lucrative to grow crops.
If you could have the new bits added with AWL (needing to breed cows to keep getting milk, hybrid plants, soil quality, riding your horse everywhere, passage of time, etc), shorter days, and tweak the prices of things a bit, you'd have a pretty good game.
