Say that you know someone (IRL, online it doesn't matter) who hasn't played Harvest Moon. They've heard of it and want to play, but they don't know which game to start with. Which game(s) would you suggest and why?

Animal Parade, because it's readily available, fun, and captures a lot of the classic spirit of the old games.

That's a good choice. A few years ago, I would have said M/FoMT, but they're getting harder to find. They're not the best games, but they have a sort of solid balance that makes them a good start.
Grand Bazaar might be a good choice since it's fairly easy. On the other hand, it lacks the depth of other games, which might give newcomers a bad impression.

Tree of Tranquility would be my recommendation. Easy game to start with, and has a similar charm to my favorite game Harvest Moon: 64. Once they are hooked, I might recommend some older games so he/she can get the whole Harvest Moon experience.

I like ToT myself, but the fact that you didn't get a chance to pause in buildings always bothered me. I prefer games where I'm not in a constant hurry to do things.
But I'll agree that it's another good starter game.

The original SNES title.
Its simplicity makes for a good place to start. Things have changed a bit since 1996 (chickens don't eat grass, you can play for longer, and you're limited to one kid), but playing it is a good way to learn the basics.
It's also probably the cheapest option, assuming the person in question owns a Wii, as it's only $8 on Virtual Console. After that, FoMT/MFoMT, for similar reasons. MM and DS are a bit too difficult for a beginner, tell them to hold off on those for a while.
