Those of you who are unsure: First person present: "I walk into the room" Third person present: "Bob walks into the room" First person past: "I walked into the room." Third person past: Bob walked into the room."
I always write in third person past tense. I dislike writing in the present tense, though I'm not sure why.

There are in reality many MANY more Points of View. They have different classifications based on various details. I write in what is called something like... Er, I'm not sure, it's been a long time since I studied this in literature... I think I write in Shifting Limited Omniscient 3rd Person. That means at any one time, the story focuses on the viewpoint of one character, is written in third person even though it is from their viewpoint, and between chapters, the character being focused on will often switch. I don't right in a specific tense ever, but rather adjust my tenses in the paragraph in order to highlight certain parts. Overall, the whole story exists in the present tense, but within each paragraph is a minor jump forward in time, during which the paragraph will contain both past and present tenses.

I just listed the most commonly known types of POV. I know, and I just blabbed on for no apparent reason. Yay for me.

Now, I'm curious. Several people here like to write in the present tense. Why is that? Any particular reason? Well, because it is more immediate. It makes the story more personal to the reader. And I find it sounds the nicest to write.

Well, because it is more immediate. It makes the story more personal to the reader. And I find it sounds the nicest to write. I find it difficult to read stories written in the present tense. I get distracted by it. I'll be happily reading, then I'll suddenly think :"Whoa, this is written in the present tense" and I can't stop focusing on it.

All I insure that I do as I'm writing is that I keep it flowing. There are ways to switch tense without being bad. It just takes doing it right.

i switch around so that the main story is third person present, but i can change it to a single character's POV and also do flashbacks. i find that the easiest.

Third person past, usual narrative type of POV I use.
And like what Butters said, I get a bit distracted when I read third person present stories, dunno why though.
but sometimes I screw up some of my tenses and use present instead of past without noticing it, cauuing improper tensing sometimes. I'm not really as smooth as writing if it's in English, but I've made quite a couple Tagalog Stories, and I make them like real quick but with the amor, the aroma, and the bomb.
It's hard to be an ESL...

Third person past: Bob walked into the room." I always write in third person past tense. I dislike writing in the present tense, though I'm not sure why. I'm pretty sure that stories have to be in the third person past tense. A story is something that you saw either in real life or in your imagination. Unless you're writing something while you see it, you're pretty much writing about what you saw. Like, here are some examples. This girl saw a war going on with her own eyes. 20 years later, she was telling all about what she saw to her children. She said, "I see it. I see all the destruction, the blood, the killing..." Doesn't make sense, doesn't it? Here is the right way. This girl saw a war going on with her own eyes. 20 years later, she was telling all about what she saw to her children. She said, "I saw it. I saw all the destruction, the blood, the killing..."

I agree with you Will, but there are quite a few stories written in the present tense. Just take a look at our fanfiction board (the other fanfics, not the Harvest Moon ones) There are several written in present tense.

Then maybe they are writing the story as they are making it out. But if they do that, then they will really have to revise it because the writer is actually concentrating on what they're going to write next instead of everything else.

*Note to myself* -NEVER write a fanfic in the present tense. ... Nightmare is written in present tense.
