“Lucky!” the girl cried out. A bright musical note hovered over her head, glimmering in the bright, but cold, Spring sun. Smiling to herself, the girl continued her work. Each step she took, each seed she planted, each stump she chopped was another step towards her goal.
Chapter One:
Magic in the Mundane
It all began for Sarah less than a week ago. She had learned of an “Exciting Ranch Plan” in Flowerbud village, offering cheap homes to farmers. With little more than the clothes on her back, Sarah had set off for Flowerbud to sign up. Upon her arrival, she was met by the mayor, who presented her with not one, not two, but three choices of land to farm. Sarah chose the lot near the river. That day was so busy, she hadn't had even a minute to work or even meet her neighbors.
So, on her first full day on the farm, Sarah was eager to begin. She opened her door and saw three tiny creatures standing there. Sarah blinked and rubbed her eyes. The creatures were still there.
The three creatures looked somewhat human, but much smaller and with pointed ears. One was dressed all in yellow, another all in red and the third was dressed all in blue. The yellow one waved at Sarah.
“Hey, you can see us?” He asked. Sarah nodded. The creature grinned. “That's great! If you can see us, you can help us! You need to come with us, yeah!”
Sarah hesitated. “But...what...I mean, who are you?” she asked.
“We're Harvest Sprites! I'm Arthur and this is Billy and he's Carlo” the Sprite gestured to each of his friends in turn. “We serve the Harvest Goddess, yeah. And we need your help, yeah!”
Two of the Harvest Sprites grabbed Sarah's hands and led her along the path leading up the mountain. The tiny creatures barely reached her waist, but even so, Sarah noticed that, although they passed several people, not one of them seemed to notice the Harvest Sprites. Arthur's earlier words recurred to her. Maybe not all people could see the Harvest Sprites then?
Finally, Sarah and the Harvest Sprites reached the top of the mountain. The Sprites led her into a small cave. After the bright morning sunshine, the cave seemed very dark and it took a few moments for Sarah's eyes to adjust to the dim. When they did, she noticed what appeared to be a statue of a woman across the room. She was very beautiful, but very sad, so sad that Sarah suddenly felt like crying.
The Harvest Sprites stood just behind Sarah, looking very downcast. Billy was wiping his eyes with his sleeve, and the other two had removed their little hats.
“...who is that a statue of?” Sarah asked the sprites.
“Not a statue, yeah,” Arthur replied. “It's the Harvest Goddess. It happened a little over a year ago.
The Goddess was sad. She thought that people no longer believed in her, no longer needed her. So she...she went away forever. Turned herself to stone for all time. But maybe...! Maybe not forever, yeah!”
“What do you mean,” Sarah asked. She knelt down on the ground, the better to get face to face with the Sprites.
“There might be a way to save her, yeah!” Carlo exclaimed.
“Yeah, YOU can help her, Sarah!” Billy added.
“Me? But how?”
“If you can collect enough magic notes, the Goddess will realize that there are people who still believe and she will come back!” Arthur looked up at Sarah, a pleading expression on his tiny face. “Please, please help us!”
“I will,” Sarah promised.
“Yay!” The Harvest Sprites cried, jumping up and down.
“Ha!” Sarah turned to see who had laughed. A slim person with longish purple hair strolled over. Sarah could not tell if this person was male or female.
“You think you can rescue her?” the newcomer gestured to the stone goddess. “I've been collecting notes for a year now, and haven't done it yet.”
“Jamie, maybe if you and Sarah work together...” Arthur spoke up timidly.
“No way! I don't need her help! I can do it alone!” Jamie snapped.
“But Arthur is right!” Billy cried.
“Forget it!” Jamie spun around and stormed out of the cave.
“Who was that?” Sarah asked the Sprites.
“That is Jamie. He showed up in town shortly before the Goddess turned to stone. He is the only one in town who can see us. Or at least he was until you showed up, Sarah,” Arthur replied. “Jamie says he wants to help the Goddess, but he has collected so few notes in such a long time, yeah. Sarah! Our best hopes are with you!”
“I'll do my best!” Sarah promised. “But how do I get notes?”
“Just work on the farm, raise animals, make friends,” Arthur replied.
“But those are such ordinary things!” Sarah protested. “If I'm going to rescue a Goddess, shouldn't I, I dunno, fight a dragon or something?”
“There is magic in everything. Everything that exists is a miracle. So small things can add up, yeah!”
“I see. I'd better get started then!” Sarah waved at the Harvest Sprites and took a step towards the exit of the cave. As she did so, a musical note appeared over her head.
“What the-?”
“It's a note, Sarah! You have one already! That is the First Step note, for taking the first step in your new life.”
“Wow...I guess there really is magic in everyday things,” Sarah thought.
