I was thinking about my NaNoWriMo project and now I'm not sure which story I want to tell. The orginal story was about three Princesses; the main character is the middle Princess, Sophia, a sensible and practical girl who lives in a fairy tale world. Everyone, except her equally practical and sensible father, King Sebastion, expects everything to happen the way they do in fairy tales. And, generally, they do. But Sophia wants to change that, so she strikes an alliance with the villain. The story kind of falls apart here: why would a good princess ally herself against the family she loves? The second story is that of Sophia's parents: Sebastion and Gloriana. Gloriana was locked away in a tower by her father for some reason. She grew up very isolated from the world and expects everything to happen they way they do in fairy tales; they do sometimes, because that's the sort of world they live in, but not always. But Gloriana's early life has so damaged her mind that she can't accept this. In a lot of ways, the parent's story is far more interesting. Gloriana's damaged mind makes her a very interesting character to me. It's too long to be a sub-plot in the main story, but I'm not sure if it's long enough to be a 50,000 word novel. Should I go for the more interesting story or the longer one? Hmm... Now that I've written it out like this, I'm thinking that I should tell the parent's story.

Can't you do both? Maybe switch each chapter from the parents to the present with the daughters?

Well, on the first one Sophia could be jealous of something (a younger/older sister, a friend with more freedom, etc., etc.) or she could be a typical spoiled brat despite her 'practicality' and expect everyone to do everything for her and throw some sort of tantrum when they don't.

I like this idea, especially since in fairy tales there's always someone who gets left out (and, if she were a younger sister, there's a good chance an older sister would overshadow her), so she wouldn't necessarily have to be spoiled. But just between the two, I'd say the first one since it sounds like it would be an interesting contrast between the happily ever after, modernized fairy tales where there's often a definite good and definite evil.
