It honestly depends on a few things: Your commitment to going through with writing it to the end, constant motivation, and making sure that your fic has it's own unique touch to it that makes it different than everyone elses.
Take for example: Me, Jux, and Border. We have all written very popular fanfics on this site (Once and Future Love, Jux's Muffy's Christmas, Border's Promise).
Each one came from an idea that popped into our heads, either randomly or from motivation when playing the games. From there, we kept writing what was flowing through our imaginations. Sometimes we might have someone proofread them, but most of the time we post it as-is.
As for the uniqueness: Once and Future Love came from an idea I had about the connection that FoMT had to AWL. I expanded on that theory, along with the teleport stone, and out came the fanfic it's become. Ideas were traded back and forth between me and Jux, but quite a bit of it came from just that original idea that came to me one day and my decision to go through with writing it.
Make any sense to you?

Sometimes it's good to mix games together. You never know what might happen. There's time travel fics, alternate universe fics, etc, etc,

It's also try not to write the story as if you were make a script for a play\movie.

Oh yeah, the name of my fanfic mentioned above is Promises. Since several promises were made in the story.

To be honest here: There are a lot of people that want to take a genre and warp it to what they wrong. That's over half of the problem.
Though since you realise this problem, I think you don't need to be told that.
I have a problem with mechanics, too. If you need help in that area or with general ideas, there is nothing wrong with asking for help. It can even be fun! I know I've sought out help and given up.
