People are idiots, and most Americans of our age want the government to deal with everything they can't. Personally, I don't like that attitude.

A lot of parents nowadays don't want to be responsible for their own kids.

Well, their parents didn't take responsibility, why should they?
Of course, if we really want to get into this fight, I have about ten years worth of carefully repressed issues involving happy, perfect, cheerful suburban households to unleash. Trust me, I don't want to get into this fight.

Yeah, we've become a society of entitlement. Give it to me, I deserve it! But I don't want to earn it. Same goes for raising kids, too many people want the school or somewhere similar to do it for them. And they want angels to come out of that idea. Doesn't happen, sorry!

I agree that parents need to step up more than they are and that not everything can be censored.
On the other hand, parents can't be expected to keep exact track of their kids 24/7 once they reach a certain age. This is why we have laws in this country prohibiting the sale of alcohol, tobacco, pornography, and other things to minors. Why not games with questionable content?
I don't even see what the issue is. I don't know about other states, but here in Nevada, every time I want to rent or buy an R-rated movie (which is rare, honestly), I have to show the cashier my ID. Why should game rentals and sales be any different?
The law is a good idea because it protects those at risk without infringing upon the rights of consenting adults.
