I don't know if you guys remember, but back in May my grandmother had open heart surgery to replace two of her valves. The surgery didn't go as well as we had hoped and my grandmother never really recovered. She got an infection that affected her lungs. We were still optimistic in early summer that she would recover, but she gradually declined to the point where she can no longer breathe unassisted. The doctors don't expect her to recover.
So.
My grandmother has a living will. In accordance with her wishes, it's been decided to take her off the machines that are keeping her alive. This will occur on Thursday; according to my aunt, she could live from anywhere to a few minutes to a few hours. The odds of her surviving are extremely unlikely, basically it would be a miracle if she lives.
I know this is a controversial subject, but everyone is in agreement that this is the right thing to do. This is no kind of life for anyone to live. Still, it's hard. I thought I was prepared for this, but you can't really prepare yourself for the reality. In some ways, it's harder than I expected, but in other ways, it's easier.

I'm at a loss at what to say, so I hope that hug helps comfort you a tiny bit.

At least you're not looking forward to it. My mom's father is spending his sunset years drinking himself into the grave and making the rest of us miserable while he's at it.

My own grandmother is living with us. She probably doesn't have much longer either.
I'll keep you in my prayers.

Thanks guys. She passed away last night. I'm sad she's gone, of course, but I also feel relieved. Her suffering is over and she's whole and in a better place

My sympathies, this happened with my grandfather. It's a hard choice, but sometimes i think medicine today only prolongs suffering at the end. May she find peace on the other side.
