I would say not, I don't know if you know this but the PS2 should be cleaned off. See what happens the dust on the front vent blocks the system and in a sence it's suffacting it's self and all that warm air sit's in there. There are two things you cna do
1) Try cleaning off the vents front and back make sure all the dust is gone 2) Or try taking it apart and cleaning it out that way(Once you take it apart you void the warrite(don't mind my spelling)For taking it apart the rubber and plastic sqaures at the bottom hide the screws just pop thoes up now once you got them out and you starting to take the lid off make sure you pull to the right. It's your PS2 so it's up to you weather you want to take it apart
I know my PS2 makes noises but thats because a while back it fell and I had to fix it. That sound may be coming from the eye inside the PS2 because as you may know or not know that moves but why it make a noise i'm not sure. If you need any help just ask and i'll see how I can help

I guess I'll just clean them like I did with the Gamecube....*grabs vacuum cleaner* I really don't want to take it appart...... But I highly doubt that I'll ever use the waranty anyway

If you do take it apart please be carful the inside of the PS2 can be tricky. Oh just a bit of advice...don't take the disk tray out..it's a pain to put back in. Your PS2 might be starting to die i'm afraid to say but theres always that little ray of hope it will work fine

my PS2 also has this issue. if your PS2 is old, don't worry about voiding the warranty; probably expired anyway.

... reviving a dead topic ...
If you do decide to remove the top off of your PS2 be very careful of the power supply cable. One wrong move and your PS2 is now a very expensive paperweight.
I took mine apart for the 3rd time the other day because I was getting the dreaded DRE (Disc Read Error) in GTA: SA. I removed the top and using a can of compressed air I blew out the RAM and vents. After that I removed the cover over the cd tray and using a q-tip i gently 'swabbed' the lens, the small round piece that spins the disc and the various sliding bars. I put it all back together and it works like a dream! Load times increased, no DREs, and it plays perfectly! I really thought my PS2 was a goner ... ;D
