Ive cleaned my PS2s lens with a Q-tip dozens of time with no problems ...
On a side note try a can of compressed air. Spray the various ports and vents, clean around the lens and use a Q-tip to gently swipe the part that holds the disk.

Same thing here.....i'm taken apart,cleaned and put back togeather systems and controllers. I know they say don't touch the lens but heres what I thnik they mean...they don't want your dirty fingres touchig and if you must clean it then use a very VERY light touch. I've touched my lens alot and mine still works fine....look i'll go do it right now"Walks away and opens lid to gamecube and touches lens......sits back now"there see it's fine......(BOOM!)

Looks like Gamecube is hard to get used too... Good thing I use PS2.
