Secret Santa gift exchange for Herfefiny
Gray sneezed at he put on his work clothes. Another year passed by, and he was reminded harshly of what he could not have. Watching Jack pass by with Mary, hand in hand, it brought feelings in jealousy, pain, and loss. However, she was happy, and that was all that mattered to him in the end. There were other bachellorettes in Mineral Town after all. Popuri seemed like a nice girl, if a bit airheaded. After her, the only other person available was Elli, the nurse.
He sneezed again, cursing that he was coming down with a spring cold. He decided to take a sick day and see if maybe the Doctor or Elli could check him out and see if he could get some medicene and a checkup.
Meanwhile, at the clinic, Elli was once again sighing as she stood at the reception desk. It was the same thing happening again and again. She'd try to flirt with the doctor, only to be ignored. Almost nobody came in, until it was time for daily checkups. She knew she needed a boyfriend, but who was available?
Doing a mental checklist, she checked off Jack, Cliff, and Rick as being taken. Then she crossed off the Doctor, as he was a hopeless case. Kai was a no-go as well, since he was only at Mineral Town during the summer, and she didn't want to move to the city to date him. So that left Gray, who was heartbroken when Mary told the town she was marrying Jack. Elli thought about him. She thought his cold, aloof personality was kinda of mysterious but cute. He was a nice guy, maybe it was worth a shot.
Gray walked into the Clinic right at that moment. "Hello?" he asked, seeing Elli at the receptionist desk. It looked like she was deeply thinking about something, as she was looking down and ignoring him, so he walked up to her and tapped her shoulder. He was rewarded with a scream and a blusing Elli. He sneezed to the side and asked, "Can I get a checkup?"
Elli had never felt so ashamed of herself. She usually prided the fact that she could multitask. Yet the moment she starts to think about Gray, said person comes and makes her notice she was zoning out. It was totally and utterly unprofessional. Her embarrasment soon turned to worry as Gray sneezed and asked for a checkup.
Looking more closely, she could see that his face was getting flushed, he was shivering a bit, while beads of sweat ran down his forehead. The doctor was out picking wild herbs with Gotz, so it was up to her to see what was up.
"The doctor isn't here right now, but I'm qualified to check you out.....er give you a check up." Elli said, quickly correcting how her sentence sounded.
Gray raised an eyebrow, but was getting really cold, really hot, and feeling dizzy at the same time. So he let Elli take his hand and lead him to the examining room. He noticed that her hand was soft, gentle, and really cool as he held it. He blushed just thinking about that.
Elli took a deep breath as she entered her 'nurse' mode. Acting like a true professional, she led Gray to the room where the Doctor usually checks the patients. From there, she checked his temperature, his blood pressure, and then had him take off his shirt so she could check his breathing. She had to focus hard to NOT notice his well toned muscles.
At the end of it all, she gave her diagnosis. "Well Gray, seems like you've got the flu. I suggest you take things easy, drink plenty of liquids, and get plenty of rest. I have some medicene ready to go for cases like this."
Gray nodded and thanked her, not telling her how cute she looked when she tried to focus on examining his health and not him. As he walked over to her desk though, he passed out.
"GRAY!!!" Was the last thing he heard before blacking out.
(3 hours later)
Gray woke up to a soothing feeling. Something was on his head, making it feel better. When he fully regained consciousness, he saw it was Elli putting a wet towel on him. Looking around, he saw he was in the clinic bed. He felt so stupid for passing out like that in front of Elli, but the feeling vanished as he saw the worry in her eyes.
Elli was very relieved when Gray opened up his eyes. When they landed on hers she blushed and looked away. It was her that put him on the bed, got him to take some medicene, and then kept putting cold towels on his head to try and bring his fever down. "Thank goodness you're up. You scared me quite a bit there." she told him.
Gray blushed at her confession and looked away. He then remembered that he didn't have any money on him....how would he pay for his treatment?! Then he remembered, he had those earrings he made for Mary in his pocket. Hopefully a bribe would work. For now though, he let himself be soothed by her healing hands.
(timeskip, 2 hours)
The day seemed to fly away as Elli and Gray chatted with each other. They found out they had a lot in common, and agreed with some of the things they thought about this town. By now Gray's fever broke, but he was still sneezing, with a mild cough here and there.
Elli gently helped him get up and led him to the front desk, where she grabbed a few pills bottles and put them in front of the sick boy. "The blues ones are for your cold. The red one is for the stuffy nose and the eventual sore throat. Take them anytime." she advised.
"Hey Elli. Give me your hand." Gray asked, holding out his own.
Elli was a bit confused, but agreed to his request, putting her hand on top of his offered one.
Gray pulled out the earrings from his pocket and put them in her hand. She gasped, as they were beautiful. Not as good as his grandfather, but she could tell he spent a lot of time working on it.
"Oh Gray, what are these for?" Elli asked.
"Payment for the checkup, treatment, and medicene." Gray toldher. "You also would look beautiful in them." he added, but his coughing cut it short.
Elli smiled, and hugged him even though he was sick. "Thanks Gray. But you didn't have to. In fact, I'll consider it truly even if you take me out on a date when you're better." she whispered in his ear as the Doctor came in and passed by them.
Gray nodded. "Will do." He left the clinic, and walked home, coughing a few times.
"Who would've thought the nurse and the blacksmith would find love so quickly?" he asked himself.

I wanted to comment earlier, but I wanted Herfefiny to have the privalige of first comment. It is her Christmas gift after all.
I also thought it was a very well written story. Kinda cute how Elli and Gray got together.
