In Harvest Moon; after years of farming, some people tend to get bored of the farmwork. They may have some preference of what they want to do, and would love if they can hire another person to do the work they don't want to.
In Harvest Moon: GBC3, you can assign your partner to do the job they are hired to do. Play the boy, and you can assign the girl to do animal work. Play the girl, and you can assign the boy to do farm work. But this game does not allow you to choose what you want to do. As the boy you cannot do animal work unless you marry the girl and she becomes pregnant. Even then, you are limited to what you can do cause you don't have animal tools. The girl can't do farm work cause she doesn't have farm tools.
Even though I like Harvest Moon: 64 more, I really like Harvest Moon: BTN because of the idea that you can hire Harvest Sprites to handle select chores you don't want to do. I really love this idea, but it's a little glitched. Sprites cannot be left to care for animals cause they will kill them over time. The feature is improved over time with select games that still carry this feature.
But in recent games, this feature has completely disappeared. I never played Harvest Moon: ANB, so I cannot comment about that game. But as far as I know, it's not there either. As the chore list is getting longer, and the game expects you to play more years; the game can get taxing over time, and the sprites are more needed than before.
Example: In Harvest Moon: Tale of Two Towns, I got bored of caring for the animals to the point that I sold them all to allow the game to move. The animation to brush/milk/sheer the animals take too long, and there are too many animals to care for. Not to mention the horse/owl/pets. Each pet requires you to talk to them, brush them, collect their product every day (except sheep and Alpacas where you collect produce every few days). Then you have to bring them outside, wait till nightfall, and bring them in (unless you have pets with high friendship rate). Then you can feed them treats. I prefer to have only 1 animal at a time, and just have a ton of field space. Farming is simple and quick; not to mention that it's by far much more profitable then animals. This makes the whole animal barn expansion thing pointless. If the wife or kid did some of the work (Like brush the animals for me) raising animals would be so much more tolerable. But having more than 4 animals makes the game drag on for too long. People like me will get bored and drop the game before reaching too far. Luckily, the animals are not required. So I can keep only one animal, and still progress through the game. No pets needed. But then living at Bluebell is Pointless. Anyone else notice that the game pretty much WANTS you to live at Bluebell. You can raise crops at Konohana without living there, but you cannot raise animals at Bluebell unless you live there. So if you live at Konohana first, unlock all the expansion, then move to Bluebell, you have access to all the farm/ranch features of both towns.

Yeahm I've noticed the slight bias towards Bluebell myself :/
I miss the sprites too. The farming really does get tedious after a few years. I don't sell my livestock off; once they get to max affection, I only brush them if they get sick or dirty. In ANB I took advantage of the multi-player to take care of my animals. Doing so takes more real time, but it doesn't use stamina, so it's convenient.
