I'm that rare breed of person who preferred IOH over SI. But since most others prefer SI, I thought I'd give it another go. I didn't exactly dislike SI , so it's not as if I'm forcing myself to play a game I hate, but tbh, I could never quite say why I preferred IOH, so this might be enlightening or something

So...SI isn't bad and the controls are better...but so far, I prefer IoH. SI has a better story, but I dislike being forced to befriend the villagers to advance the plot. It's one of my gripes about AP. Having an established village makes the game easier, but I actually enjoy games where I get villagers to move in (MM, IoH and ANB).
I'm still not sure how the weather system is different?

If you mean how the light system is different, let me explain:
In IoH: Only 2 days actually give you light points. Sunny = 3 points Fair = 1 point
In Sunshine Islands, 3 days give you light points, giving you a better chance to grow crops. Sunny = 3 points Fair = 2 points Cloudy = 1 point
The water system is the same for both games.
