I've always asked myself, why are there 649 Pokemon in total and growing? At one point, there was only 150 Pokemon, Mew being discovered as the 151st Pokemon. Why as time progresses do the number of Pokemon grow, and Pokemon tend to change over time?
This is my theory.
In the beginning, there were only a certain amount of Pokemon. Pokemon only existed between Kanto and Johto regions, and there must have been only 100 or so Pokemon at the time discovered. As time came by, people started capturing Pokemon for use in illegal experiments in order to make new Pokemon breeds. Acorns would be hollowed out, and modified to capture the innocent beasts.
Then the time of war came. According to Lt. Surge, a war happened sometime in his lifetime. No details came of who fought the war, and why. But Lt. Surge claims that he used Pokemon to Zap his enemies into paralysis. This could mean one of two things: Pokemon was once used to attack people or Pokemon battles were born during the wars to battle between Pokemon.
I believe that the people who wanted to control Pokemon as trainers won the war, and a Pokemon league was born to celebrate the victory. But that also means that Pokemon research and experiments were now legal. New Pokemon such as Magnemite and Porygon were the first artificial Pokemon. Extinct Pokemon such as Omanyte, Kabuto, and Aerodactyl are now resurrected to join the modern Pokemon roster.
Soon enough, Pokemon experiments were beginning to get out of hand. Eevee, which is a ultra cute toy Pokemon popular by young girls have been rounded up and captured by a new organization known as Team Rocket. Using genetic experiments, this Pokemon which could not evolve became a profit powerhouse with it's several evolutionary paths. Eevee now became much more popular with anyone because of it's adorable baseic form, and it's many evolved forms. At the time, there were only 3 known evolutions, but that's because Pokemon's happiness did not exist. Pokemon were often tortured and forced into competative battles to grow any type of happiness.
Then came the search for the most strongest and powerful Pokemon. Cinnabar island found a fossil of a legendary and extinct Pokemon named Mew. Reviving it was impossible because the genetic sample was incomplete. So the scientists decide to remake the Pokemon instead of trying to revive it. Most of the experiments failed, and these failed living creatures were dumped and hidden in Route 13, 14, 15 and 23. Cerulean cave also became a dumping ground for these ugly and formless Pokemon. These Pokemon are known as Ditto.
What the scientist did not know at the time was that Ditto had the ability to absorb and change their bodies to become anything they want to be. When found in the wild, trainers and collectors captured them for novelty instead of training, as Ditto was not a very useful Pokemon in competative combat. But many years later, Ditto became a Pokemon Population bomb.
After the events of Pokemon Red and Blue, many changes happened to the regions. Including the extermination of the Pokemon Tower and replaced with Radio tower. One of the most influential events that happened was the creation of the second daycare in Johto. This Daycare unlike the one found in Kanto was able to raise two Pokemon at once. Pokemon were able to breed between each other, and many new Pokemon hatched from eggs. This is evident by the fact that Togepi was hatched from an egg, but neither of it's parents are a Togetic or a Togekiss.
Back to Ditto. Ditto was also discovered to be able to change forms and gender at will, which became a popular breeding tool for both trainers and scientists. With the discovery of Pokemon breeding, and Ditto's incredible ability to breed with almost any Pokemon, several "mutations" happened. Some were subtle, like the changing of move types (Bite's change from normal to dark), while others changed the Pokemon's type (Magnemite's electric to electric/steel). Every now and then, a new Pokemon was discovered (Togepi was created by an Exeggcute mating with a Chansey). New Pokemon leaked into the Johto and Kanto region, and populated. This explains why are there no Houndour in Pokemon red/blue, but there are in Pokemon Silver/Gold.
During this time, experiments got overboard, and overly unhappy Pokemon became Dark Pokemon. Some Pokemon became Shadow Pokemon (See Pokemon Coloseum, and Pokemon Gale of Darkness), while others just mutated to becoming Dark types.
In response, other Pokemon trainers were trating their Pokemon with love and respect. And thus some overly happy Pokemon came to evolve into new and undiscovered ways. Eevee now has the ability to evolve into Espeon and Umbreon, Chanseynow evolves into Blssey. So many discovered Pokemon from breeding and affection raised the roster from 151 to 252.
But other regions were becoming jealous of the two Pokemon populated regions. With the exception of their own legendary Pokemon, they only had normal animals. (Refer to the Pokedex which is Proof that animals do exists.) So travelers from Hoenn went to the Johto and Kanto region to buy Pokemon, and bring back for experiments and breeding. Once a number of unique Pokemon was made, they released them into the wild to have their own Pokemon league. This explains why Hoenn has no Pokemon from either Johto and Kanto.
Hoenn received much scrutiny from other regions, so when Sinnoh and Unova decided to breed their own Pokemon, they decided to mix Pokemon from previous regions and their own creations. Having Pokemon tournaments and breeding new Pokemon became a brisk business for new regions.
Now Kalos wants in on making their own pocket monsters and having their own Pokemon League. Greed and envy powers the will to create more and more Pokemon so that they can be used in more than just combat. Pokemon now are bred and trained to be in movies, talent shows, and to replace machines in many types of jobs.
What is amazing is that these creatures which are bred and slaved against their will, evolved to love their trainers. Pokemon battles became fun and not bloody battles of who is stronger. Pokemon likes lifting heavy items, or drilling tunnels for their owners. And other Pokemon likes the idea to perform in dance musicals or talent shows.
And so, that is my theory. After playing the Pokemon games, this is how I explain how Pokemon keep popping up every generation. It may not be a perfect theory, and I'm sure some Pokemon nerd can crush it. But until someone can convince me otherwise, I stand by this theory.
