Next Tuesday, the plenary session of the Parliament of Catalonia will debate a proposed resolution for the reparation and restitution of the memory of those accused of witchcraft. This is a resolution jointly presented by the ERC, JxCat, and CUP groups to “repair the historical memory” of all the women who were “unjustly condemned, executed and repressed throughout history for witchcraft.” In its explanatory statement, the resolution explains that Catalonia is one of the places in Europe where the most women were accused of witchcraft . The beginnings of this persecution date back to the year 1471 , “a clear example of the violence and discrimination to which women have been subjected throughout history.” The resolution urges the municipalities of Catalonia to include the names of women convicted of witchcraft on their streets “In the 15th century, in a society permeated by misogyny, many women were unjustly accused of causing death and destruction, and were treated as members of a criminal organization led by the devil himself. Women were accused of being witches based on lies, and the way they were forced to confess these incredible crimes was the most terrible torture. Against these women, the authorities ignored their own laws and tried them without any procedural guarantee. "Those women lived in a society fully convinced of the evil origin of their misfortunes," the text of the initiative Malta Phone Number states. The resolution transfers its support to the campaign "They were not witches, they were women" , promoted by the magazine Sàpiens and alludes to recent studies that recover the names of more than seven hundred women who, between the 15th and 18th centuries, were prosecuted, tortured and executed by hanging . “Immigrant women, poor women, healing women, women with knowledge about sexuality and reproduction, women considered conflictive, widowed women, gypsy women... All of them stigmatized and identified by their own neighbors as witches.” However - point out the groups promoting the initiative - these studies have been scarce and this episode has not been incorporated in a standardized way into academic curricula. Nor have public policies been promoted to repair the memory of the victims. Now is the time to change this situation and promote public policies aimed at promoting the memory of so many women who have been unjustly executed for unfounded sentences, and promoting historical justice in line with the initiatives that have emerged in other places, such as Scotland, Switzerland, Norway or Navarra” , they claim. For all these reasons, the resolution urges the Parliament to “recognize women accused and convicted of witchcraft as victims of a misogynistic persecution that led to the murder of thousands of women around the world.” Likewise, it calls on the Government to repair the memory of these women “unjustly condemned, executed and repressed throughout history for witchcraft” and to raise awareness among the entire population about the values of equality and human rights. The resolution raises the need to promote academic studies with a gender perspective on the witch hunt and its causes, incorporating this fact into the academic curriculum, as well as promoting the promotion of informative actions to publicize the witch hunt carried out for so many years in Catalonia, and raise awareness about this historical episode and its causes.
