Chapter Four: Lost and Found
A few minutes later, Yasmine slowly lifted her head off of the table. It felt like she was lifting a thousand pounds by her neck and shoulders. She sniffled loudly, wiping away the hot tears that had splashed onto her cheeks. Standing up, she threw on her jacket and stepped out of the door without a second thought, her shoes already on her feet.
"Nathan...? Nate, where are you, sweetie?" she called, over and over, as she walked around the farm once again. "It's time for lunch... we're having you're favorite sandwiches!" Each time Yasmine's cries became louder and more desperate as she searched the farm for the third and fourth times. Sighing, she realized Mary would have checked around here first, so her best bet right now was town. He couldn't have gone into the woods-- Yasmine had been there when talking to Liam earlier, and besides, she had glanced at the bridge that separated the farm from the forest every few minutes. Nathan had to be in the town.
OoOoO
"Carter, have you seen Nathan?" Yasmine asked the aging priest. He had been young, only in his late twenties or early thirties when before Mary was married to Jack. Now, he was almost fifty and his light gold hair was flecked with silvery-gray, looking for all the world like a hunk of precious metal Jack was always digging up out of the mines. "I can't say I have, Yasmine," he told her with an apologetic smile. "I've been too busy watching the kids." 'The kids' were Summer and Cedric, May and Stu's young children. Stu had proposed to May only seven years earlier, when Yasmine was almost ten. They had had Summer within that same year, and Cedric two years later. Then there was Miki, Elli's youngest girl. She was the same age as Cedric-- four. She was an adorable child with light brown hair and eyes, who was as shy as Elli, but had a serious face like the Doctor. Finally there was Andrew, Ann and Cliff's youngest son. He had adorable freckles, brown hair, and bright blue eyes. He was cheerful, just like Ann, and hated the indoors. He was seven-- one year older than Summer. When Nathan was younger he would come as well, but now that he was an older boy Jack had decided to let him stay home, which, of course, caused more trouble for Mary, but she had dumped all of her motherly responsibility over the child to Yasmine. Which is why I'm in this mess right now! Yasmine thought angrily. All of her sadness had gone, and in place to being ashamed she was angry. I have my own life. I'M not the one who gave birth to the little brat. I know Mary is busy with the Library and all, but couldn't she take Nate with her? He doesn't climb things, and he'd be fine with a picture book and some crackers. But nooooooo, he needs tons of fresh air, and I need 'more responsibility'. Yasmine vividly remembered Mary scolding her when she complained about watching her younger brother. 'I was eighteen when I married your father,' she had said, 'and two seasons later I had you. I was raised to be responsible-- I owned the Library when I was fourteen! Take care of your brother. You never know when you'll have your own child to care for.' Yasmine, however, seriously doubted any sane man would want to marry her. There were many other pretty girls to marry, like Liam's younger sister of two years, Eva. She had Karen's breathtaking eyes and Rick's soft, light strawberry-blond hair. She knew every boy in town (except for Liam, of course) had a huge crush on her, including Trey, Matt, and even little Nathan! Which brought her back to the reason she was out here, anyway. Unfortunately, she had searched the whole town (including the deserted beach) and there had been no sign of Nathan. Sighing for about the twentieth time in the last hour, Yasmine decided to head home. She was starving, and guessed that, since she had seen neither Mary nor Nathan, that Mary had found the boy and they were waiting for her at home at that very moment.
OoOoO
Yasmine hummed contentedly as she half-ran home from Carter's chapel and onto the neatly-trimmed green grass of her gigantic lawn. She saw nobody outside, so that meant that they had found Nate-- and were all patiently waiting for her so they could dig in! Before she touched the doorknow, however, she glanced in the window next to it. The image flew through her mind, hitting her like a ton of bricks before her brain sent that message throughout her body. Before she could react. Before she understood.
Her family was not waiting for her. The whole family, including Nathan, were sitting around the table, talking, laughing, and shoveling the last of the food down their throats. Even Jack had stopped working so he could eat! Still Yasmine did not fully understand what she was seeing. They couldn't have forgotten her... they couldn't have... But then she knew. She wasn't going crazy. They really had forgotten about her. Suddenly, she shivered, feeling extremely cold, despite the sun's warm rays shining upon her. They had forgotten her.
