Chapter fifteen: More memories
Karen stared up at the ceiling. She lay on her bed, her hair wet after she had taken a shower. Karen could hear her parents talking in the dining room, but she wasn’t listening to them. It was a week after Lilia’s birthday, and summer was right around the corner. Everyone in Mineral Town seemed to be getting excited at the soon arrival of Popuri and Kai. Soon the town would be back to normal, or that’s what everyone thought. But Karen knew it would never be the same with Rick gone. Didn’t anyone care about him? Karen sighed. The answer to that was no. Rick had left his friends and family, even in his mother’s condition. He was dead to the town, even to his own mother. It was this thought that brought Karen’s tears that night.
“Karen get up! I have something to show you!” Karen rubbed her eyes and blinked sleepily. The morning sun was shining in her window, and her mother was yelling at her to get up. The day couldn’t have started better.
Karen walked into the kitchen where her mother and father sat at the table eating some eggs and toast. At Karen’s place there was a framed black and white photo. Sasha looked up from her breakfast and smiled. “Good morning, dear! Do you know what that is?” she asked, pointing at the picture. "I found it in an old box." Karen sat down and picked up the picture. Four girls and two boys sat on a log together. They were all about six years old, and they were smiling. Karen was in it, and she sat next to a small Ann and a boy with a hat covering his face. Mary and Gray were also in the picture, and so was Elli. Behind them a small girl in a dress, Popuri, was jumping on Rick. They were in front of the Goddess Pond, and they looked as happy as ever. Karen looked up from the picture. “Who’s the boy in the hat? The one next to me.” she asked. Sasha looked at it. “It’s that boy who visited here during the summer. Remember that? I can’t remember his name though...” she replied. Karen thought back to that age. She tried to remember the boy's name, but she couldn’t. Although, the boy did look familiar...
Jack pulled a weed from his garden. Sweat was dripping from his forehead. He sat down by the big honey tree and rested his head against it. It was a hot spring day, and it was in the afternoon. Jack sighed. He knew that if it was hot now, it would be a lot worse next month. Jack closed his eyes, and decided that a little nap wouldn’t be that bad for him...
“Boo!” Jack jumped up. “What happened?!” he yelled, looking around wildly. Karen lay on the grass by his feet, laughing her head off. Jack calmed down when he saw her. “You...got...so...scared!” She managed to say in between laughs. Jack rolled his eyes playfully. “Ha ha.” he said sarcastically. Karen calmed down and wiped her eyes. “So, do you wanna get a drink? And don’t you dare tell me you’re to busy.” she said. The sun was setting behind the mountain, and Jack looked around his farm. He sighed. There was so much work he hadn’t gotten to do. But it was to late now. “Yah, sure. Let’s head over to the Inn.” he said. Karen smiled and got up, and they walked to the Inn together.
That night, Karen sat in bed, holding the picture her mother had given her. Her yes were focused on that one boy, the one with the hat. Why did he have to look so familiar? She sighed. Would she ever figure it out?
That night, Karen dreamt of two children, chasing each other and laughing
