Chapter 8
Ann's mind was spinning. Elli, not with Jack? That meant Karen- "NO!" She shouted, slapping Elli's hand away and backing off. "How can I beleive you? Over my best friend? She'd NEVER lie to me! NEVER!" Elli looked very confused and hurt. "Ann, please, calm down! You'll get sick!" she pleaded. "No! Even if I was, I wouldn't come to your damn Clinic!" Elli would have been crying, but she bit her lip. Ann continued. "Why do you insist on making my life miserable? I know you took Jack from me, and you knew Popuri would take me out of town, so you'd have time with him and he'd never want me back! But, when I get back earlier than you expect, you throw me all this crap about how Karen lied and you were never with Jack? Let me ask you this, how can I believe a player over my best friend?" Elli was looking seriously hurt, and she finally burst into tears. Sobbing, she ran off, never looking back. Never in her life had she been so insulted before. Why wouldn't Ann believe her? It was true! She actually hadn't seen Jack in a long time! She'd only heard the rumors (from Manna) about how was worried where Ann had gone and why she wouldn't speak to him.
Ann rushed inside her house, past a very confused Doug. She slammed her door so loudly that even her father wouldn't interfere. Now, she could finally be alone. To cry.
After both girls had run off, Karen casually followed Elli. She went inside the Clinic, where she was greeted cheerily. "Hello, Karen! Here to get your dad's medi-" "Shut it." Karen hissed. She grabbed Eli by the cuff, and dragged her to behind the bookcases. "Now, you listen up, and listen good." ***

Chapter 9
Elli swallowed and nodded her head quickly. Another time she would have screamed for the Docter, but Karen held a broken wine bottle dangerously close to her throat. "Listening, now, aren't we?" she hissed. "Now that I've got your attention," she cocked her head toward the bottle, "I want you to do as I say, or..." Karen grinned as Elli nodded again. "You have to go to Jack's house and tell him that Ann wasn't talking to him because she really loved Cliff, and was cheating on him. And, that when she left, she was really leaving to get Cliff to come back to her. That plan backfired, and now she never wants to speak to him again. If he asks why you're telling him, explain that she wouldn't even consider it and she never liked him in the first place." Elli nodded again, even though she couldn't bear telling this awful lie and hurting poor Jack. "Oh. And, you are not to tell anyone about this, or I will find out. If, by any chance, you do slip up in any way, me and my litte friend here will find you- I promise. Are we clear?" Elli took a deep breath. "Y-yes." Karen grinned and turned to leave, tucking the bottle under her vest. As she left, Elli stood there, shaking. Why would Karen do this? She and Ann were supposed to be best friends. And why to Jack? Had he or Ann done something to her? She wanted desparetly to tell someone, but, fristly, nobody would believe her, and secondly, Karen would do bodily harm to her. So, after the Clinic closed at 4:00 sharp, Elli told the Docter she was running a little errand and would be back by 6:00. ***

Chapter 10
Elli walked at a slow, yet steady pace towards Jack's house. How could she lie like this? It really wasn't in her nature... but, she didn't want to risk being tortured by Karen... Poor Ann! And Popuri! They hadn't known they were being led into a trap... She noticed that she was almost there, almost to the house where she would tell the biggest, most mean and cruel lie she had ever told. She imagined what he'd look like, what he'd say. His beautiful brown eyes would get glassy, and angry. He'd probably need to sit down, she might even have to take him to the Clinic! "Elli? Elli, is that you?" Elli spun around, only to face Ann. "Where are you going...?" she was stopped short. Her blue eyes looked firey. "So I was right! You ARE with Jack! You're visiting him now! I'm glad I didn't trust you! Karen, lie to her very best friend? She'd never hurt anyone-" How little she knew. "-Popuri was right about you! You're a lying, cheating, snobby little sneaky brat!" That last comment knocked the wind out of Elli. Popuri... hated her? Popuri never hated anyone! Not even when Rick yelled at Kai, she still forgave him. Her brain wanted to scream out the truth, and to watch Ann shrink back and apologize, saying she'd been all wrong and Karen was an evil, deciving- "Just go! Go visit your true love! I hate you, Elli!" With that, Ann stomped off. Elli just stood there, shivering in the cold. How had she gotten into this mess? She shouldn't tell Jack the lies... she couldn't... but she had to. Anyway, she'd get hurt if she didn't! Why risk your life to save someone who hates you? She'd tell Jack the lie, tell him quickly and never give it a second thought!
"Elli? What are you doing here?" asked a very surprised Jack. "Well... I'm here about Ann." The whole story poured out, and Elli didn't even think. At the end, Jack looked just as she'd pictured. He looked hurt, wounded, and very, very tired. "Thank you for telling me, Elli." he wearily said. "Sorry to cause you so much trouble. I didn't think she hated me so much that she asked you to tell me..." Elli left his house, and, hard as she tried, the tears came to her the whole night long. ***

Chapter 11
For the next few days, every time she saw Karen, she was greeted with a sly smirk and a pat of her vest. Elli knew very well that under the vest, was the broken wine bottle.
Things weren't going too good for Ann, either. Every time she saw Jack, before she ran away, she saw in his eyes a sadness. The day after Elli was blackmailed, the phone rang in the Inn. "Hello?" Ann asked. "ANN!" Poprui screamed. Ann felt the guilt rise. She'd forgotten to call Popuri and tell her she'd come home. "You're home?? But... is Cliff there already?" "...No. He's... got a girlfriend." "Oh, no! Thats awful! No wonder you didn't call! Kai and I were worried about you! Well, I was worried and Kai was worried that I'd get too worried... "I'm just glad you're OK. I'll be home in a few days, maybe a week." "Bye, Popuri." "See ya!" Ann hung up with a sigh. She'd missed Popuri. "Heya, Ann!" Ann whirled around, face-to-face with Karen. "Oh. Hi Karen." Ann sulkily replied. "Oh, you're not upset about Jack, are you?" "Well..." "You're mad at Elli? Yeah, I'd be too." There was a moment of silence, then Karen spoke once more. "Hey, how 'bout we pay her back for what she did?" Ann watched in surprise as Karen pulled out a broken wine bottle from underneath her vest. ***

Chapter 12
Ann jumped up in shock. "Y-you mean... hurt her?" Karen rolled her eyes. "Yeah, dummy. Why not hurt her physically? She hurt you emotionally!" "Well... Yeah, but, its different!" "How?" Karen smirked. "...It just is!" Ann told her, annoyance bulding. "If we hurt her with this glass, she might die! I won't die just because Jack isn't with me!" "Its close enough!" Karen mumbled, but she put away the bottle. She'd deal with Elli later, whether Ann liked it or not.
Ann shook her head as Karen left without a goodbye. Yes, she was pissed at Elli, but to hurt her? With broken glass? She just wasn't that kind of person. Why had Karen, her best friend, even suggested it? Ann couldn't figure it out. Either way, Karen was definetly acting weird. She'd never been a violent person. Drunk sometimes, yes, but never violent. Before she could come up with any more thoughts the door opened with a creak. In walked Jack. He looked around hopefully, and, when he spotten Ann, he walked over to her. What would he possibly want with me? she thought, confused. The words he spoke made her head spin. "Ann... why do you hate me so much?" ***

Chapter 13
What a stupid question, thought Ann. "Hate you? No! I'm just disgusted at you and also very mad! Why? Isn't it obvious? You left me for Elli!" Now it was Jack's turn to be confused. "Left you? For Elli?" "Yes! I figured something was up when I heard the rumor that she broke up with the Docter!" "What are you talking about? She never broke up with him! And, I never cheated on you! Elli came and told me last night that you were cheating me for Cliff, and you never liked me and the reason you left was to see Cliff and convince him to come back!" He paused, and thought a moment. "You know, she sounded pretty shaken up when she told me. When she left, I heard sobbing from outside. I wonder what's up?" Ann was speechless, trying to comprehend all this. "Elli told you I hated you? No way! The reason I never spoke to you for a while was because Karen told me that you and Elli were going out. She also told me that Elli and the Docter got into a huge fight." She was suddenly quiet. "I-I should have listened to Elli. She said that all that wasn't true, that Karen lied. I didn't beleive my best friend would do that, but..." She had to pause to wipe away her tears. "...But I guess I was wrong." A new, terrifying thought came to her. "Jack, before you came, Karen told me that we could get even with Elli. She then held up a broken wine bottle." Jack nodded, eyes wide. "I saw her walk out. She creeped me out, the way she looked." They both gasped, and looked at each other. "Elli!" ***

Chaoter 14
Elli had been quiet all day, and absent-minded. The thought that she had told that lie kept on eating at her. She had to tell someone! Anyone... "Elli." a voice hissed, oddly familiar. Elli shrunk back in the shadows, shivering with fear. "D-docter... d-don't p-pla-ay those j-jokes..." The figure laughed. "I'm not playing around, Elli. And you know quite well that I'm not the Docter." Elli knew that, of course. He had told her that he'd be at the Library, for it was a Wednesday. Her thoughts were scattered today. "Elli, I'm very pleased that you told that lie. I didn't hurt you- but I will now." "Now? Why...?" Asked a very scared Elli. The figure cackled, stepping into the light. Karen's long, golden-brown hair was wild, her green eyes bloodshot. "You know too much. I knew that a goody-goody like you couldn't take holding that big secret for more than a week. So, I'm going to put you out of your misery." Karen withdrew the broken bottle, which gleamed dangerously in the light. Elli frantically looked around, but knew in her heart that nobody would come save her. Karen caught the look. "No, you dumbass. Didn't you figure it out by now? Your precious Tim won't come to your rescue- and neither will anyone else." She cackled. "And, not even Jack or Ann will come here, they both hate you too much. I saw Jack come in the Inn, and I knew that might mean trouble. They'd come question you, and I don't want that to happen. And when they do arrive, this will all look like... a little accident. A poor, poor nurse got a bit too drunk, and killed herself. "She shook her head mockingly. "Now, lets just get this overwith." She walked over, taking slow, but steady menacing steps. Elli sqeezed her eyes shut, and then. Then the pain came. She felt the cut on her neck, felt the blood trickle out. She knew she was about to die. She opened one eyes to see Karen raise the bottle... ***
