Chapter 15 "Karen!" a voice screamed. Elli heard a gasp, and then a set of feet dashing towards where she was. "I'll be back." Karen hissed. "You can count on it." With that, she snuck away, somehow. "Karen? Karen, I know its you!" The voice, which turned out to be Ann, flicked on the lights. Jack searched around for Karen, while Ann looked for Elli. When she finally found her, she let out a small, shrill shreik of terror. "Oh NO, Elli!" she cried, rushing over. When Ann saw the wounds on Elli's throat, she burst into tears. "No, Elli!" she sobbed. "I'm so sorry! This whole thing is my fault! If only I had believed you! This would never had happened if I had believed you! You'd never lie to me, and you were even kind to me when I was mad at you!" Elli nodded weakly, and tried to smile. She knew talking would be too much for her. Ann seemed to notice the conditions. "I'll go find the Docter! He's at the Library, right?" As Ann rushed out, Jack called her over. "Ann, I'm really sorry, but I can't find Karen. She must have escaped." Ann solemnly nodded, biting her lip to keep from crying. Elli understood that. She had been decieved by a person who had been her "friend" for most of her life. She knew now, more than ever, that life wasn't going to be nice and go her way forver. Elli had learned that a while ago. Ann looked worriedly at Elli, and said something to Jack. He nodded, and ran outside. Ann turned to Elli. Her words were becoming fuzzy, along with Elli's vision. "He's going to find the Docter. You'll be OK. You have to be. Mineral Town won't be the same without you..." Those were the last words Elli heard before she blacked out. *** Author's note~ Yes, I know, I know, in both of my Fanfics someone faints. Oh well! It makes it more interesting...

Chapter 16
Elli awoke to the murmur of voices. "Elli! You're awake!" "Finally!" "You scared me, sis!" That was Stu. "How many fingers am I holding up?" "Can you hear us?" "I see you've awaken, Elli." Elli blushed. It was the Docter. Many other comments (some odd) followed. Elli wanted to tell them they were giving her a headache. When she opened her mouth, everyone was silent, waiting. What came out sounded nothing like a word. It sounded like a throaty grunt. Her throat ached, too. Everyone peered in closer, confused. "Sis! Are you OK?" Stu again. Usually she'd be annoyed, but now she just wanted to hug him. Elli tried again. Everyone waited patiently, eyes nervous. Again, instead of a word came a throaty whimper. She tried clearing her throat, but it hurt. She let out a yelp (which was hardly loud at all) which made it hurt even more. The Docter stood up, and pushed through all the people. "Attention! I need to examine Elli now, and to do so I'll need everyone to leave." Everyone looked unhappy, but they filed out. The Docter was about to check her, but he saw Stu. "I'm sorry Stu," he said gently, "but that means you, too." Stu nodded, biting his lip. He then walked out, and kept looking back. Elli gave him a small smile. He nodded and slumped out. The Docter sighed, then regarded Elli. "Elli, this might hurt a bit, but I want you to open your mouth very wide." Elli nodded, and complied. He stuch a long, fuzzy thing down her throat. Elli's eyes filled with tears of pain. After a few seconds, he pulled it out. He did a few more checks before he sighed again, sitting down. Elli caught the well-guarded worried look. She waited for him to speak. After a moment, he did, but the words terrified her. "Elli, when Karen cut you she cut open your voice box. I'm afraid you'll never be able to speak again." ***

Chapter 17
When Ann heard the news, she refused to go outside of her room for anything besides food. She was so upset, and she deeply believed it was her fault that Elli would never speak again. After a few days, she decided that she needed to get outside. Her father was worried, so she thought he'd be relieved. Every day now, Ann went with Popuri to the Goddess Spring from 7:40 AM to 10:00 AM to pray for Elli. One day, about 2 seasons later, the unthinkable happened.
"Oh, great Goddess of the Harvest, please hear my prayer." Ann said, like she did every morning. "Please watch over Elli, and help her get better. And, if it is your will, please forgive and guide me, for I know what I have done is wrong. Thank you, Amen." Ann waited a few seconds before sighing. She'd prayed for over 2 seasons now, and nothing had happened. Oh well. Maybe her faith wasn't great enough, or maybe... maybe she had done something so beyond awful that the Harvest Goddess would never forgive her. She rose up, and checked her watch. It said 9:40. She still had time to pray. Ann kneeled down again, tucking a strand of orange-auburn hair behind an ear. As she took a breath to begin the prayer, she heard a heavenly song. It was coming from the Goddess Spring! Ann looked down, wondering what could be happening. Suddenly, a beautiful woman appeared, standing on a cloud. Ann sucked in her breath. This lady was beautiful! Too beautiful for the likes of her to look upon. The lady had long, flowing green hair, and a blue, shimmery top and pants. She was smiling! "Hello, Ann." the woman said, in a voice 100 times more beautiful than the traitor, Karen's was. "I have been watching you. You have been very, very consistant in praying to me." So this lady was the Harvest Goddess! "I have decided that you truly are sorry, and for that I will forgive you," she continued. She studied Ann, and said, "I will also grant you what you want, deep inside your heart. Since the desire is good, I will grant it." Ann gasped. How could she know? Well, she WAS the Harvest Goddess. "Let it be done!" With a small wave of her perfect hand, she disappeared. Ann sat there in awe for a few minutes, letting it all sink in. Nobody she knew, besides Carter, had ever been visited by the Harvest Goddess! Checking her watch, which read 10:20, Ann got up to leave. Before she left, she whispered, "Thank you, Harvest Goddess," and felt a light breeze carress her cheek.
To this day Ann goes with her friend Popuri to visit the Goddess Spring to praise the Harvest Goddess for what she did for her. ***
